A 40-year-old comment made by King Charles has come back to “haunt” him for most of his life, according to a new documentary made by His Majesty. A new Amazon Prime documentary, Finding Harmony: A King’s Vision, explores his passion for the environment and organic farming.
In the film, narrator Kate Winslet acknowledged the monarch’s passion for greenery and said: “While explaining his passion for organic farming to the press, Prince Charles made a comment that has haunted him ever since.”
She was referring to remarks he made in a 1986 television interview. Charles said: “I just come and talk to the plants, really—very important to talk to them, they respond.”
They include Dumfries House, an 18th-century stately home on a 2,000-acre estate, where the foundation runs training courses and provides jobs for the local community, which was left devastated by the closure of coal mines. Elsewhere, attention is paid to sustainability projects as far afield as Guyana, India and Afghanistan.
On his worries about the state of the planet, Charles said: “Of course. That’s been my main motivation for a long, long time, and you can see what’s happening. But I mean the underlying principles behind what I call Harmony, I think we need to follow, if we’re going to somehow ensure that this poor old planet can support so many. It’s unlikely there’s anywhere else.”
Nicolas Brown, the film’s director, said: “As an American, I didn’t fully understand the depth of King Charles’s environmental engagement. I didn’t realise that internationally, especially in Commonwealth countries, he’s known as a serious environmental advocate. The scale of his power and long-term thinking is extraordinary.”
