Country music legend Clint Black is about to add another major honor to his already stacked list of accolades. The Grand Ole Opry member and Grammy-winning singer-songwriter will be named a BMI Icon at the 73rd annual BMI Country Awards, taking place Monday, November 18, at BMI’s Nashville headquarters.
The private, invitation-only event — hosted by BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill, EVP & Chief Creative Officer Mike Steinberg, and Nashville VP of Creative Clay Bradley — will also celebrate the year’s 50 most-performed country songs while revealing the winners for Country Songwriter of the Year, Country Song of the Year, and Country Publisher of the Year.

“Clint Black’s career is a testament to the power of songwriting, and he is a true trailblazer whose artistry continues to leave an indelible mark on country music,” said Bradley in a statement. “He set a new standard for storytelling in song that defined an era. His ability to craft songs that resonate across decades has made him a true BMI Icon.”
Since joining BMI in 1993, Black has notched 22 No. 1 singles, each one co-written by the star himself. With his signature mix of traditional twang and polished storytelling, the Texas native helped define the ’90s country boom, selling more than 20 million albums and inspiring a generation of singer-songwriters. His 1989 debut album, Killin’ Time, remains a landmark in the genre, spinning off five consecutive No. 1 hits and cementing his reputation as one of Nashville’s sharpest lyricists.

Over the course of his multi-decade career, Black has earned trophies from the CMA, ACM, GRAMMY Awards and American Music Awards, while also branching into acting on both the big and small screens.
With this latest honor, he joins a storied list of BMI Icons that includes Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Toby Keith, Vince Gill, and Merle Haggard — plus songwriting luminaries across genres such as Stevie Nicks, Carole King, and Brian Wilson.
