Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie’s rental agreements will be reviewed by the royal household within a year, it has emerged.
A report published by the National Audit Office (NAO) on Friday revealed that the sisters had been living rent-free in their respective homes within royal palaces for more than 15 years.
Their rental payments at St James’s Palace and Kensington Palace are covered by the King using the Privy Purse, his own private income.
The arrangement was made under the reign of Elizabeth II.
However, royal sources confirmed that all financial matters were kept under “regular review”.
The NAO report revealed that the Princesses, neither of whom are working royals, had lease agreements known as licences which were “agreed annually for a one-year period”.
The next review will be considered particularly significant in light of the latest developments and the scandal surrounding the York family’s links to Jeffrey Epstein.
Buckingham Palace is understood to be keen to ensure the institution is seen as transparent amid increased scrutiny over its property arrangements.
