Weekly bird walks begin June 2
The Discovery Bird Walk series kicks off at 8 a.m. June 2, meeting at Friends Pond, 2020 Old Park Road.
Participants can join Master Naturalists Janet and Andy Raddatz for a guided walk along Old Park Road and the Ancient Shores Trail to observe local birds and wildlife. Walks are expected to last two to three hours, but attendees may leave at any time.
The walks are open to ages 12 and older, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Binoculars will be available for loan, and pets are not permitted.
Visitors are encouraged to take water, sunscreen, bug spray and wear long pants, long sleeves, and closed-toe shoes or hiking boots.
A vehicle admission pass is required and can be purchased online or at the park office.
Children’s story time and wildlife program set for June 6
At 11 a.m. June 6, families can attend “Kid Time with Papa Dewey” at the Sanderling Nature Center, 1020 Beach Park Lane. The program features songs, stories, and nature-themed activities designed to entertain and educate children.
Later that day, at 2 p.m., Jerry from Wildlife of Wisconsin will present a live wildlife program at the same location. The event includes close-up encounters with birds of prey and other animals, as well as information about wildlife rehabilitation and what to do if you find injured wildlife.
Both events are free to attend as part of Wisconsin’s Free Fun Weekend, which waives park admission fees.
Music in the Park: Brett Hall performs June 6
Singer-songwriter Brett Hall will perform a folk music concert at 7 p.m. June 6 at the park amphitheater near the campground. The concert will feature John Denver-style music and original songs. In case of inclement weather, the program will move to the Sanderling Nature Center.
Parking is available in lots P4, P5 or P6, and visitors can also walk over from the campground.
Wildflowers & wild trees walk scheduled for June 7
Naturalist Phyllis McKenzie will lead a wildflower and tree identification walk at 11 a.m. June 7, starting at the Black River Trail parking lot, 6167 S. 12th St. The 1.5- to 2-mile walk will explore blooming wildflowers and trees while highlighting Wisconsin’s native pollinators.
Participants are encouraged to take water, sunscreen, bug spray and wear comfortable hiking shoes. No bathrooms or water are available at the trailhead; the nearest facilities are vault toilets at the North Beach parking lot or at the park office. A vehicle admission pass is required.
