Korea Box Office: Yeon Sang-ho’s ‘The Ugly’ Rises to No. 1 as ‘Demon Slayer’ Moves to Second

Yeon Sang-ho’s “The Ugly” climbed to the top of the Korean box office with $1.9 million from 254,828 admissions over Sept. 19–21, edging past “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle,” which earned $1.7 million and settled for second.

According to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, “The Ugly” has reached $5.4 million since opening on Sept. 11, while “Demon Slayer” stands at $37.4 million after a month in release.

“The Ugly” stars Park Jeong-min alongside Kwon Hae-hyo, Shin Hyun-been, Im Seong-jae, and Han Ji-hyun. The plot follows Dong-hwan, the son of a visually impaired seal engraving master, who discovers skeletal remains and investigates the long-hidden truth about his mother’s disappearance four decades earlier.

“Detective Conan: One-Eyed Flashback” debuted in fourth place with $364,768 from 46,723 admissions. Directed by Shigehara Katsuya and written by Takeharu Sakurai (from the manga by Aoyama Gosho), the film features voice cast including Takayama Minami, Yamazaki Wakana and Koyama Rikiya.
