Kristen Stewart had a poignant answer when asked what would be the most devastating thing Los Angeles could lose during a Tuesday night event hosted by Architectural Digest.
Asked “What would break your heart if it disappeared from LA?” while in West Hollywood to celebrate AD’s March Los Angeles issue, the actor-director saluted the communities at the heart of the city.
“Immigrants,” the lifelong Angeleno said without skipping a beat.
Subtly denouncing the brutal immigration crackdown that began terrorizing the city last summer, Stewart said, “I can’t stand the idea that the dismantling of culture that did have a hand in making me who I am.”
Making sure not to center her personal experience, she acknowledged how trivial her feelings were compared to the way people’s lives are being “completely unearthed, uprooted” and “destroyed” by Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s presence across Southern California.
“This is just not who we are,” the Oscar nominee went on, saying she’s been “dying everyday” thinking about how to support her immigrant neighbors.
“What do we do about this?” she continued. “I can’t fathom that it’s happening until it doesn’t happen … Los Angeles doesn’t exist without all of us.”
Online, people applauded Stewart for supporting the immigrant communities that make LA what it is.
“I knew my queen wouldn’t disappoint me,” wrote one TikTok user.
“We love you loca!!!” another posted, nodding to a much-memed line from the “Twilight” saga.
“A true LA girl,” someone else wrote. “Raised around the wonderful contributions from POC and LGBTQIA+.”
