Kristin Davis is sharing her past reservations about motherhood.
The actress, 61, admitted she didn’t always know she wanted to be a mom on the Tuesday, July 7, episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson‘s Dinner’s on Me podcast.
The Sex and the City star said she previously didn’t want to have kids because she was prioritizing other things in her life.
“I always said no,” Davis told Ferguson, 50. “I was like, ‘I don’t wanna get married. I don’t wanna have kids.’ That was my thing.”

At the time, she was focused on traveling and acting. However, seeing her costars Cynthia Nixon and Sarah Jessica Parker with their families changed her mind.
“They wanted to have kids, and Cyn already had Sam, and then she had more. And Sarah really, really so, so really wanted to so badly for so long. And then it was really interesting to watch them do it, you know? It was like, ‘Oh, wow, that’s interesting,’ ” she said, adding that her other friends were also having kids.
“I was like, ‘Well, yes, I enjoy being an auntie. I do. I enjoy it. It’s good. It’s interesting.’ And I think that the success of the show kind of allowed me to breathe easy in a way,” Davis continued.
“You know when you’re young and you don’t know if it’s gonna work out? I couldn’t really focus on multiple things,” the And Just Like That… actress said.
Davis shared that she “settled” down after the success of Sex and the City, in which she starred as Charlotte York Goldenblatt for all six seasons from 1998 to 2004.
“Then after a while, I think I really was thinking, ‘What am I gonna do for the rest of my life? Like what other challenges are there? What can I commit myself to in a deep way?’ And what is deeper than parenting?” she said.

On the podcast, Davis, who adopted Gemma Rose in 2011 and Wilson in 2018, said she was “very scared” to become a parent by herself.
“I was very scared. Very, very scared, so it took quite a while for me to do it,” she said.

The mom of two also shared advice to those considering motherhood, saying they should “really examine what you’re being motivated from.”
“I also think that just in terms of women, you know, we’re told by society that we have to be mothers, we have to be mothers, we have to be mothers. And for a long time, I was really angered by that,” she told the Modern Family star.
“The whole notion that you’re not complete unless you have a child is just so false, right? And I don’t think everyone is suited to be a parent. I just don’t find that helpful,” Davis added.
“We shouldn’t ever have to apologize for being ambitious or wanting to work or wanting to travel or be adventurous or whatever the thing is that you want. So I think you have to really do some work as a woman to divest yourself of what society is telling you you should be doing,” she said.
In 2023, Davis spoke about balancing motherhood with her acting career in an interview with Haute Living Los Angeles.
When she reprised her Sex and the City role in the Max spinoff And Just Like That…, she would travel weekly to see her kids on the weekend.
“It’s such a luxury to not only be able to work, but to work with my friends of 25 years — but seven months is a long time to shoot, and a long time to be trying to go back and forth every weekend to see my kids,” Davis said at the time.
“I didn’t want to take them out of school because my daughter had just started middle school,” she continued. “I was able to get them started with school, so at least I felt like they had a routine, and my plan was not to come back every weekend. My plan was to maybe bring them out or, you know, skip a weekend here and there, but my 5-year-old was not having it. He was mad.”
“So, I had to come back every weekend because I just felt so guilty. But this is what happens with trying to find a work-life balance,” the TV star said.
