Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have stayed out of the public eye this week, but Travis’s brother, Jason Kelce, and sister-in-law, Kylie Kelce, have spoken on podcasts about Swift joining the family.
On July 21, Jason joined the Ross Tucker Football Podcast, where he opened up about how Swift dating Travis and ultimately marrying him changed his family’s life. While he had fans before Swift, he and his family received much more attention from people outside of their typical football-fan demographic.
Jason spoke about having a bodyguard now, saying, “I forget what rapper it was, but you end up getting a bodyguard, not so much to protect you but to protect you from doing something stupid. And I think that having a Dutch around diffuses a lot of situations sometimes from getting to a level that’s not good. And luckily, we really haven’t had anything pop up. The vast majority of people are awesome. They’re super nice. They’re either fans of you or fans of the game or whatever event we’re at. So I never thought I would [have a bodyguard]. But it’s good to have a travel buddy.”
Host Ross Tucker asked if fame was gradual for him. The former Philadelphia Eagles player explained, “It was definitely gradual and then it just was like a very big flip obviously when Taylor and Travis started dating, and that led to a whole—another demographic and fan base being interested in not just me but our entire family. And I went from very much being dominated by large fat men coming up to me and shaking my hand and thanking me for being an Eagle, to little girls. It was quite a shift of people that became fans.”
Prior to Swift and his podcast with Travis Kelce, New Heights, “I had a really good fan base in Philadelphia,” he said, adding that going to the Super Bowl and his 2018 Super Bowl parade speech increased his fan base.
“[And] obviously when Taylor got on board, that’s when it shifted to like, oh, now we’re in a whole different category,” he continued. “Now there’s people that pretty much dominate—they’re music fans, and now all of a sudden they’re coming into the football world or interested in the family because of that. So it’s definitely been gradual but at the same time, pretty intense the last two or three years.”
Kylie Kelce spoke briefly about the wedding on her own podcast Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce yesterday. “I would like to say congratulations to Tay and Trav,” she began. “It was absolutely magical. I’m so happy for them. We love them so, so dearly. And it was only making it official, because Taylor’s been part of the family now for quite some time. So that’s that.”
She then explained why she wouldn’t share any more. “Anything else, you can check in with Taylor and Travis about because any of the details that they want to share, they can share,” she said. “But otherwise, it was intimate and incredible and full of love, both for each other and everybody else’s love for them.”
On a June 4 episode of her podcast, Kylie herself spoke about the impact fame in general has had on her family, particularly on her and Jason’s daughters, who are all young.
“The girls think that it’s funny,” she began. “They think it’s funny that when we go out in public, people say, ‘Are you Jason Kelce?’ And then we go back to the house and they say, ‘Are you Jason Kelce?’ Sometimes we catch them playing a game amongst themselves where they are not involving adults, where they will start to go, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m such a huge fan. Can we take a picture?’”
“Yuck,” Kylie continued. “I don’t like that our kids have picked up on this. Obviously, they’re gonna pick up on it when they leave the house with their dad. It makes me sad that this is true…it makes me sad that this is the reality. I want them to have as normal of an upbringing as possible. But we just make it a point to try and create a degree of separation as best we can.”
Kylie also added that sometimes their daughters don’t find the attention their parents get to be hilarious. “Every so often Wyatt [their oldest daughter, who is 6] will not like that someone is either talking about approaching us or staring at us. She recently stared at a group of young women who were speaking loudly across the street from us. And she stared at them with a really nasty look on her face and said, ‘They are not taking a picture with my dad.’ And so I think most of the time they think it’s funny and entertaining, and sometimes they do not. And I think that we should collectively leave them out of it, okay? Great, let’s do that.”
