Help, our favourite alt-pop girlies are fighting.
If you’re a fan of Lana Del Rey and Ethel Cain, you may well have spotted that, in the last 24 hours, things between the two singers have grown a little intense.
While the two artists have long garnered comparisons for the similarities in their music, it seems things have turned sour over a feud that is rumoured to involve ex-boyfriends, a new diss track and… Waffle House?
Hopefully, the pair can follow the lead of Charli XCX and Lorde and eventually work it out on the remix. In the meantime, though, here’s the timeline of the drama so far…
Critics have been comparing Ethel Cain and Lana Del Rey for some time now
Ethel Cain’s rise over the past few years has earned her many comparisons to Lana Del Rey, due to the similarities in their brooding, melancholy sound and exploration of themes like love in small-town America.
According to one social media user, Ethel even once cited Lana as one of her favourite musical artists on her DeviantArt profile from 2015. She also uploaded a cover of Lana’s breakthrough hit Born To Die back in 2017, but that seems to have been scrubbed from the internet with the exception of fan reposts.
In another universe, Ethel really could have been a perfect opening act at one of Lana’s concerts.
However, it seems that Ethel eventually began to grow tired of the comparison as her own profile grew and she became a revered artist in her own right.
In 2022, the American Teenager singer told i-D.: “I love Lana and I love her music but there’s a hundred other things at play here. If that’s an entry way for a review, that’s fine. But sometimes people arrive at Lana Del Rey and stop at Lana Del Rey.”
She continued: “I called [the comparison] lazy writing because it’s lazy for me and her. I think it’s kind of a detriment to the expansive work of two female artists to just reduce them to being similar to each other.”
Ethel has also made some controversial posts about her former muse. When one social media user posted “Lana Del Rey walked so Ethel Cain could run”, the American Teenager singer responded by writing: “I pushed her over when I ran past”.
Rumours of a feud between the two singers first began swirling when Lana Del Rey name-checked Ethel Cain in a new song
Up until this week, there hasn’t really been any public beef suggesting an actual falling-out between the pair. But that all changed when Lana posted a snippet on Instagram of herself listening to a track from her long-awaited new album in a car.
Fans’ ears quickly pricked up when they heard the first line: “Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post, think it’s cute re-enacting my Chicago post.”
While the cryptic lyric might not make much sense on first listen, the personal lore in both artists’ worlds goes deep, and it didn’t take long for fans to decipher what Lana might have been hinting at.
Back in 2022, Lana posted a photo with musician Jack Donoghue from the band Salem – who she was reportedly dating at the time – posing outside Chicago’s Cook County Jail.
Around the same time, Ethel shared her own picture with Jack on X with the caption “ok wait my turn” before deleting it. This is made a little more awkward due to rumours that they have also been romanticallyinvolved, though this has not been confirmed by either party.
Ethel Cain and Lana Del Rey appear to both be vying for the title of the ‘most famous girl at the Waffle House’
In her recent teaser, Lana was also heard singing: “The most famous girl at the Waffle House. I don’t regret it. The most famous girl at the Waffle House.”
This seems to be a reference to a 2022 New York Times profile of Ethel titled The Most Famous Girl At The Waffle House.
Lana also has her own connection to the US breakfast restaurant chain, having gone viral when pictures of her in the uniform picking up a shift there (seemingly just for vibes) emerged one fateful day back in 2023.
Given her own unlikely relationship with the chain, fans are wondering whether “the most famous girl at the Waffle House” is a title that Lana thinks should go to her.
After all, she did once declare herself to be “the most famous woman you know on the iPad” on the closing track of her Norman Fucking Rockwell album.
Things escalated when Ethel Cain addressed the rumoured Lana Del Rey feud on Instagram
Hours after Lana shared her snippet, Ethel appeared to address the supposed feud by claiming on her Instagram story: “Update: Lana Del Rey has blocked Ethel Cain on Instagram.”
The Crush singer is renowned for being “chronically online”, so whether or not this was just a joke about the drama remains to be seen, but it wouldn’t be at all surprising given Lana’s history of public call-outs and social media controversy.
What we do know however, is that they certainly don’t follow each other right now.
Lana Del Rey has claimed she was ‘disturbed’ by Ethel Cain’s past behaviour
Lana later addressed the drama in more detail, explaining where her personal issues with the Nettles singer stem from.
In a since-deleted Instagram comment on a post alluding to the drama, Lana claimed: “I didn’t know who Ethel was until a few years ago – when someone brought to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters making constant comments about my weight, I was confused at what she was getting at.
“Then when I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life I was definitely disturbed.”
celebrity.land UK has contacted Ethel Cain’s team for comment.
