Late British Rock Icon Once Dedicated a Song Specifically to Bob Dylan

David Bowie pulled off one of music history’s boldest moves in 1971 when he dedicated an entire song to Bob Dylan – but it wasn’t exactly the tribute Dylan might have expected. Hidden on Bowie’s acclaimed album Hunky Dory is “Song For Bob Dylan,” a track that sounds like an homage but actually served as Bowie’s musical challenge to the folk-rock legend.

At the time, according to Collider, Dylan was already considered the “voice of a generation,” riding high on his reputation as one of music’s most influential figures. But Bowie saw an opportunity to make his own mark, and he wasn’t shy about it.

The song directly references Dylan’s own “Song To Woody,” where Dylan paid tribute to his idol Woody Guthrie. Bowie cleverly created a musical inception – a song about a song about an influence. Musically, he mimicked Dylan’s walking bass lines and gravelly vocal style, but the lyrics told a different story.

Bowie’s Song Carried a Bold Message About Musical Leadership

Rather than simple admiration, Bowie’s dedication suggested it was time for him to surpass Dylan in the rock world. The young British artist was essentially announcing his intention to take over where he felt Dylan was stepping back.

Bowie later explained the song’s significance, saying it represented what the entire album was about. If someone wasn’t going to use rock and roll to its fullest potential, he would step up and do it himself.

By the late 1960s, Dylan had grown tired of being labeled the voice of a generation and was pulling back from the spotlight. Bowie recognized this shift and positioned himself as the next major force in rock music.

Did This Musical Challenge Create Tension Between the Icons?

The dedication seemed to create some awkwardness between the two musicians. When they met at a party in the mid-1970s, Bowie recalled that Dylan remained reserved during their conversation.

In a 1976 Playboy interview, Bowie was surprisingly candid about their relationship. When asked if Dylan had impressed him, he replied coolly that he’d just like to know what Dylan thought of him. He even admitted with dark humor, “Actually, I think he hates me.”

Dylan, staying true to his private nature, never publicly addressed Bowie’s musical challenge.

The Two Legends Eventually Found Common Ground

Despite any initial tension, the situation never developed into a lasting feud. Bowie later covered Dylan songs, including “Like A Rolling Stone,” and they even shared touring musicians like guitarist Mick Ronson.

The dedication ultimately stands as a fascinating snapshot of musical ambition and generational change. Bowie dared to challenge Dylan’s reign at a time when Dylan himself was questioning his role as rock’s leading voice.

“Song For Bob Dylan” remains a hidden gem that captures Bowie’s drive to reshape music by simultaneously embracing and challenging his contemporaries.
