Sam Rivers, the founding bassist of the rap-rock band Limp Bizkit, has passed away at the age of 48, as announced by the band on Saturday. His final images are now hauntingly poignant.
The cause of death remains undisclosed.
The Florida-born musician’s passing comes just months after his last social media post in August, a jovial update from London where he was seen relaxing in the plush back seat of his car. “I hope everyone is having a great day. In London with my fav and and the LB Fam #limpbizkit #limpbizkitstyle #limpbizkitfamily #nothingbutlove,” Rivers penned on Instagram.
Since then, the comment section of the post has been flooded with condolences from mourning fans.
One photo features Rivers donning a black hoodie and matching tinted sunglasses, alongside an unidentified woman sporting a camo jacket and green-tinted sunglasses. Another snapshot captures Rivers reclining in a Maybach sprinter van, clad in a white T-shirt before a Limp Bizkit concert, reports The Mirror.
Rivers’ bandmates issued a collective statement expressing their deep sorrow. “In Loving Memory of Our Brother, Sam Rivers. Today we lost our brother. Our bandmate. Our heartbeat,” the statement read.
“Sam Rivers wasn’t just our bass player – he was pure magic. The pulse beneath every song, the calm in the chaos, the soul in the sound.”
The band’s statement continued, “From the first note we ever played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced. His talent was effortless, his presence unforgettable, his heart enormous. We shared so many moments – wild ones, quiet ones, beautiful ones – and every one of them meant more because Sam was there.”
Their heartfelt tribute concluded, “He was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of human. A true legend of legends. And his spirit will live forever in every groove, every stage, every memory. We love you, Sam. We’ll carry you with us, always. Rest easy, brother. Your music never ends. – Fred, Wes, John and DJ Lethal.”
DJ Lethal wrote in a separate post, “We love you Sam rivers. Please respect the family’s privacy at this moment. Give Sam his flowers and play Sam rivers basslines all day! We are in shock. Rest in power my brother! You will live on through your music and the lives you helped save with your music, charity work and friendships. We are heartbroken enjoy every millisecond of life. It’s not guaranteed.”
Born and raised in Jacksonville, Rivers formed Limp Bizkit in 1994 alongside vocalist Fred Durst and drummer John Otto.
Guitarist Wes Borland and DJ Lethal became part of the lineup soon afterward. The group transformed millennial rock music through their hit songs Break Stuff, My Way, Behind Blue Eyes and Take a Look Around.
Their albums, Significant Other and Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water, achieved multi-platinum status, with four of their releases earning platinum or higher.
During their heyday, the group was nominated for three Grammy Awards and won a Billboard Music Award.
Rivers departed from the band in 2015 after being diagnosed with liver disease.
