A lip reader claims Ariana Grande was annoyed and vented her frustrations during Doja Cat‘s MTV VMAs performance.

The annual awards ceremony drew stars from across the entertainment industry to the UBS Arena in New York City on Sept. 7 to honor this year’s top artists and music videos.

While fans were delighted to see some incredible performances from some of the biggest names in music, Grande was, at one point, not a happy viewer, according to lip reader, NJ Hickling.

Cameras caught Grande, who was seated next to Lady Gaga, in deep concentration while watching Doja Cat’s performance in the audience, nodding her head and singing along. She said, “Wow,” at one point, Hickling told the Express US.

However, as the song progressed, Grande turned to a man seated next to her and said, “I wish i could could see her more,” Hickling adds.

Hickling claims a camera was obscuring Grande’s view at one point, and she was forced to vent her frustrations with not being able to see. She reportedly remarked, “I wish I could see her more.”

Viewers were also fixated on Doja Cat’s performance, but for a completely different reason. Some fans speculated she was lip-syncing.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, numerous viewers criticized the rapper for appearing to lip-sync her lyrics instead of performing them live.

One viewer questioned, “Is Doja lip-syncing?? And is she really that big of an act that she can open a show? She may be; I’m just asking.”

Another chimed in, “Worst Lip sincing ever,” as a third added, “Doja lip syncing for her life, hunny.” A fourth observer noted, “Oh, it’s a lip-syncing night. That’s okay. It’s good to know.”

A fifth person pointed out, “can dance like no other but the worst lip singer in history.”

During the opening performance, Doja Cat premiered her new single Jealous Type. This release comes ahead of her forthcoming album, Vie, which is set to launch on Sept. 26.

Doja recently hinted at her upcoming album during a chat with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. She revealed that a significant portion of her record explores her personal experiences with love bombing.

She explained, “There’s other things outside of myself that were inspiring me to write about these things. I had been in relationships that made me think about things in a different way, and I think naivete is a big part of this album too.”

The rapper went on, “I speak about rushing and love bombing in a way. That’s kind of a big one. I think that’s a fun subject to sing about.”

Grande proved a massive winner at the VMAs on Sept. 7, walking away with the awards for Video of the Year, Best Pop Video, and Best Long Form Video.

When she accepted one of the most coveted awards at the VMAs, the Video of the Year, which she won for Brighter Days Ahead, she was visibly emotional.

“Art has been a safe space for me since I was a kid,” Grande said during her second acceptance speech of the night. “I’m so grateful that I get to do this with my life and to have such fiercely loving and supportive fans.”
