You won’t need to stay up late to see a whopping 23-foot moon with detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface – or a range of moon-themed performances held under it, like a fairytale opera based on “The Little Mermaid” or renditions of “The Dark Side of the Moon” by Pink Floyd.
Instead, the one-of-a-kind moonlit stage will be featured throughout the daytime and evening at the Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway from Oct. 4-20 during the Festival of the Moon.
Highlighted by U.K. artist Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon creation suspended mid-air over the orchestra section inside the theater, the festival will present a calendar of moon-themed performances.
Those include Moonrise, a concert presented by the New Jersey Symphony; a rendering of “Swan Lake, Act II and More” by the American Repertory Ballet; the fairytale opera “Rusalka” based on “The Little Mermaid” by Nthe ew Jersey Opera Theater; Ada Twist, Scientist & Friends, a family musical spotlighting STEM curriculum; and “The Dark Side of the Moon” and other Pink Floyd songs by Heroes for Ghosts.

Things to do: One of NJ’s most culturally inclusive festival series is underway with music, food, more
“It’s not every day you can see the New Jersey Symphony or American Repertory Ballet performing under the glow of the moon,” staated Mayor Raymond A. Giacobbe. “The Festival of the Moon is more than an event; it’s a magical moment for Rahway and everyone who joins us.”
Other experiences for families include a presentation of the animated movie “SING” with karaoke and “Goodnight, Moon: Tales for Tiny Astronauts” story hour under the moon.
