Lizzie Cullen on New Music, BBC Introducing and a Standout Corn Exchange Moment – Kennet Radio

There’s something quietly powerful about a Lizzie Cullen performance. When she joined Saturday Showcase this weekend, that same warmth and honesty carried straight into the studio.

A lot has happened since her last visit — new releases, a BBC Introducing moment, and one gig she describes as her favourite yet.

“I had the best time”

One of the standout highlights from the past year was opening a show at the Corn Exchange in Newbury — performing a full set of her own original material.

“I got to sing all my own original songs on the keyboard, piano… everybody listened and was so supportive.”

It wasn’t just another date in the diary. It clearly meant something more.

“That was probably my most favourite gig I’ve ever played so far.”

She described the atmosphere as “beautiful” and said everything just came together on the night.

“I was buzzing afterwards. It was amazing.”

There’s something special about playing to a room that truly listens — and that sense of connection runs right through Lizzie’s music.

“I write them when I’m feeling something… even just for one person to say that it made them think of something… it really does mean a lot.”

“Talk to My Piano”

Listeners heard “Talk to My Piano”, a track that means a lot to her personally and one she wanted people to rediscover.

“I just want people to hear it a bit more… because the lyrics mean quite a lot to me.”

It starts gently and builds, with layered vocals towards the end — a detail that stood out on air. The song captures that feeling of emotions you can’t quite say out loud, except through music.

“It comes out when I sing.”

A BBC Introducing moment

Since releasing her latest single “Sunsets”, Lizzie has also had a boost from BBC Introducing.

After submitting the track, she received the email every emerging artist hopes for — it had been picked up for airplay.

“They were going to play it… which was amazing and really cool to hear.”

She tuned in not just to hear her own track, but to discover other new artists too.

“I love these rabbit holes that you end up going down.”

It’s exactly the kind of platform that opens doors — both for musicians and for listeners looking for something new.

Leaning into piano

While some of her earlier releases leaned more into guitar-led pop, Lizzie hinted that her next chapter will lean further into piano — her first instrument and where she feels most at home musically.

“I’ve decided that… I’m going to lean on the piano a bit more.”

The direction won’t necessarily be slower or softer — just more rooted in the instrument that shapes her songwriting.

“It’s going to be an interesting year hopefully.”

“Sunsets” — written in Cornwall

Her newest single, “Sunsets”, was written while on holiday in Cornwall, inspired quite literally by the view outside her room.

“There was a beautiful sunset… and at night the stars were incredible.”

Sometimes songs arrive slowly. This one didn’t.

“If something comes to me I just have to sit at a piano or grab a guitar… it sometimes does just flow. And it did thankfully.”

She wrote it that evening — then immediately did what many songwriters do.

“Mum, can you listen to this please? I’ve written a new song.”

The track feels reflective — about memories, growing up, and the moments that quietly shape us.

“It is about reminiscing… when you think back about the things that shape us when we’re a bit younger.”

What’s next?

There’s more studio time ahead this year, with plans to release further singles. There’s even a Christmas song waiting in the wings.

“I’ve written a Christmas song… maybe my producer will let me this year.”

For now, it’s very much a case of watch this space — but if the past year is anything to go by, there’s plenty more to come.
