‘Love Island USA’ Season 8 Premiere Drama Recap

Summer is nearly here, and for all devout reality TV fans, that means another drama-filled season of “Love Island USA” is well underway and taking over social media.

In recent years, each installment of the hit American dating spinoff has become something of a phenomenon in its own right, spawning beloved friendships and fan-favorite couples that have quickly become the talk of the fandom and beyond. Yet for all the sparks flying in the villa, the conversation around Peacock’s biggest reality TV hit has increasingly shifted from romance to controversy.

For Season 8, the drama began before “Love Island USA” even returned to our screens June 2.

Days ahead of the premiere, contestant Vasana Montgomery came under scrutiny after videos resurfaced online showing her using the N-word. Following the backlash, she was removed from the cast shortly after it was announced and was not mentioned during the season premiere.

On Wednesday, Montgomery addressed the controversy publicly for the first time in a statement shared on her Instagram Stories that began, “I wanted to address a couple of videos from my teen years that have recently resurfaced.”

“In those videos, I used a racial slur. There is no excuse for it, and I am deeply sorry,” she wrote. “I am embarrassed and disappointed by my words. I take full responsibility for what I said and understand why it has hurt and upset people.”

Montgomery went on to say that she has “grown a lot as a person” since those videos were recorded “and taken the time to educate myself, listen, learn, and better understand the impact that language can have.”

“That growth does not erase my mistake, and I am not asking anyone to excuse it,” she continued. “I believe people should be held accountable for their actions, but I also believe in growing, learning, and becoming better.”

“To anyone I hurt or disappointed, I am truly sorry,” she concluded.

That’s not the only drama unfolding outside the villa.

Contestant Sean Reifel also caught flak after joining the Season 8 cast, though not from the “Love Island USA” fandom. Instead, a mayor in Pennsylvania reportedly took issue with Reifel leaving his job to pursue love on the Peacock series.

In the show’s “Meet the Islanders” segment, Reifel shared, “I’m not a model, not an actor, I’m a police officer actually,” who had signed with Pennsylvania’s Bethlehem Police Department last year.

“You could be having the worst day of your life, and I’ll just help you sift through that,” the islander added.

Reifel likely won’t be returning to that role after his elimination Sunday. ABC station WHTM reported that a department captain confirmed he is no longer employed there as of this month.

Mayor J. William Reynolds told the station Reifel resigned to appear on the show, and he was clearly frustrated by the decision.

“Our police department spent a lot of time training, and we paid thousands of taxpayer dollars to send him to the police academy,” he said. “We are disappointed he left, as we now have another vacancy in our department that is impossible to fill until next year.”

He added, “I never thought I’d see the day in America where reality show participation wins out over being a police officer.”
