Lucas Garrett has been playing professionally for over 13 years now. The Glens Falls native blends elements of rock, folk, new wave, and indie music into one unique sound. To date, Garrett has released four albums that were heavily played on various local radio stations including WEXT and WEQX.

Lucas is proof that you can do anything you put your mind to at any point in your life. You’d never know that he is in a wheelchair because it doesn’t affect his music. He stated in a previous interview that “music is an equalizer.” Music is a universal language that extends beyond what our eyes can see. It’s all about what we hear and how it makes us feel. If a song can make you feel something, then the artist(s) were successful. Let’s just say that Lucas Garrett’s music is heartfelt and speaks to experiences that we all have endured in our lives.

Now.. back to “Michigan.”

At its heart, the song is about reflecting on past relationships – not only the conflicts, but also the pieces that are left behind after for us to make sense of. According to Garrett, “My new song, “Michigan,” … largely tackles relationship issues, a lot of it deals with the nostalgia of a connection, and having the ability to pay homage to what you gained from it — both good and bad.”

The lyric, “All the places I’ve been, Would’ve never happened without you” would resonate with a lot of people, just like it resonates with Garrett. Despite the song largely talking about challenges that arise in relationships, the song also alludes to the good things. Perhaps the things you learn, places you visit, or people you meet would have never happened without having this person in your life. Through the bad, there is also good. It’s easy to focus on the difficult things in our lives, but it’s important to remember the positive.

In a recent Instagram post by Lucas, he says this specific lyric also reminds him of his relationship with his friend, Rick Bolton. In fact, we all have Rick to thank for Lucas Garrett’s music. Rick was the one who encouraged Lucas to perform at an open mic night back in 2012. 13 years later, we have lots of great music from Lucas, and a big thanks is owed to Bolton.

“Michigan” has a lovely way of addressing the positives and negatives that come along with having a special person in your life. It’s important to recognize and reflect on how someone has affected your life and understand the impact that they’ve had. The song ends with the lyric “There’s no point in lying, It would’ve never happened without you.” – which perfectly wraps up what the song is about. It’s the full circle moment when we can accept how we’ve changed after the relationship has come to an end.

Be sure to stream “Michigan” and check out Lucas Garrett’s website and follow on social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok) for upcoming shows and music – it’s important to support our local artists.

“Michigan” features Lucas Garrett on guitars and vocals, Thom Carvey on bass, Sam Zucchini on drums and is co-produced by Alec Lewis.

Stream “Michigan” on streaming platforms: Spotify, Bandcamp, Amazon Music, and Apple Music.
