Macaulay Culkin is saying goodbye to one of the most important women in his life.
On January 30, fans of Home Alone were devastated to learn about the death of legendary actress Catherine O’Hara. Famous for portraying Macaulay’s character Kevin McAllister’s mom, Kate, and for roles in Schitt’s Creek and Beetlejuice, the actress died at age 71 after battling “a brief illness,” according to a report from Us Weekly.
Macaulay paid tribute to the late star on Instagram, voicing just how special their bond was more than three decades after filming Home Alone.
“Mama. I thought we had time,” he wrote. “I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.”
As soon as fans saw Macaulay’s comment about Catherine’s death, they rallied around him and sent their condolences.
“Absolutely heartbroken for you and all of us 💔,” one person wrote in the comments. “I’m so sorry for your loss, we all loved her so much! 😢❤️,” another penned. “I’m very sorry for your loss. ❤️🩹 For decades, she has been the beloved mother of the most beloved Christmas film of all time. I know that she felt like a mother to you. ❤️,” a different follower added.
Fans know Macaulay and Catherine’s friendship was something both stars cherished over the years. When Macaulay received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in December 2023, Catherine gave a speech that said a great deal about how much the two adored one another.
“Home Alone was, is and always will be a beloved global sensation,” she stated at the time. “The reason families all over the world can’t let a year go by without watching and loving Home Alone together is because of Macaulay Culkin.”
