Madonna and her ex-husband, Guy Ritchie, were locked in a custody battle over their son Rocco in 2016 — and the “Material Girl” singer recently revealed that the situation took its toll on her mental health.
“There were moments in my life [where] I wanted to cut my arms off,” Madonna, 67, told Jay Shetty during the Monday, September 29, episode of his podcast, On Purpose. “I actually contemplated suicide. That probably sounds really weird coming from me because I’m not emo … but I was like, ‘I can’t take this pain anymore.’”
The mom of six described the custody battle as “one of the most painful moments of [her] life.”
“Even though my marriage didn’t work out … someone trying to take my child away from me, it was like, ‘They might as well just kill me,’” she continued. “That’s what I was thinking.”
Madonna and Ritchie, 57, began dating after meeting at a party in 1999, and they welcomed Rocco in August 2000. Four months later, the “Like a Virgin” singer and Ritchie officially tied the knot, and were married until 2008.

The situation regarding custody of their son was sparked in 2015 when Rocco, who was 15 at the time, refused to travel back from London to spend the holidays in New York with his mother.
It eventually required Madonna and the Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels director to work out a custody agreement after Rocco decided he wanted to live in England with his father. The two settled the case in September 2016.
