The MLB trade deadline isn’t until August 3, but the Seattle Mariners are already making moves. With the pitching group loaded this season, it looks like the front office is willing to let some go after striking a deal with the Kansas City Royals.

Reports indicate the Mariners are sending Randy Dobnak, who is 31 years old, to the Royals for an unknown package, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. The deal came to fruition after Dobnak exercised his upward-mobility clause on his contract with Seattle.
“The Kansas City Royals are acquiring right-hander Randy Dobnak from Seattle, sources tell ESPN,” reported Passan. “Dobnak exercised an upward-mobility clause in his contract and will be added to Kansas City’s 40-man roster, starting at Triple-A Omaha.”
An upward-mobility clause allows a minor league veteran to initiate their own roster availability. It can only be utilized if that player is not on the active 40-man roster, typically by a specific date. Due to the clause, the Mariners felt it was best to trade the right-hander to an organization that plans on at least placing him on the 40-man roster.
Randy Dobnak has not played a major league game yet this season. The last time he took the mound in MLB was in 2025 with the Minnesota Twins, where he played one game for the organization. In five total years in MLB, Dobnak owns a 4.86 ERA and 1.372 WHIP with 85 strikeouts.

This might not be the only move Seattle makes in the coming month or so. The rumor mill will heat up with the trade deadline nearing, and the Mariners certainly could be in the mix for some deals.
