Mark Ruffalo recently addressed renewed discussion about criticism of Marvel movies. He responded directly to questions about the genre’s place in cinema. The actor, best known for playing the Hulk, shared his perspective when asked about remarks from filmmaker Martin Scorsese.

Mark Ruffalo fires back at criticism against Marvel movies

During his appearance on We’re Not Kidding with Mehdi Hasan, when asked about comments from filmmakers like Martin Scorsese who have dismissed superhero films as “not cinema,” Mark Ruffalo stated, “I just see it as acting and storytelling. I like to do it all. I don’t give a s—.”

He explained that coming from a theater background allowed him to explore different genres without limitations. He emphasized that Marvel is no different in that respect, offering actors exciting opportunities for creative growth.

Ruffalo described his experience working on Marvel films as rewarding, emphasizing the continuity of playing the Hulk across multiple projects. “I never thought I’d have a real, legit steady job,” he said. He highlighted how each film brings unique creative energy depending on the director, citing Avengers and Thor: Ragnarok as distinct experiences.

The actor also reflected on fan reactions to Marvel’s biggest moments. He recalled attending a screening of Avengers: Endgame anonymously with his son, describing how the crowd erupted with cheers and tears during climactic scenes. “I have never sat in one of those movies where I’ve seen people literally screaming, crying, beating their chests,” he noted, underscoring the cultural impact of the franchise.

Ruffalo acknowledged the criticisms but rejected the idea that Marvel movies lack cinematic value. “It’s all storytelling,” he insisted, adding that he chooses projects that challenge him artistically while also entertaining audiences.
