Eternals 2
Insider Daniel Richtman reported that Eternals 2 is no longer in development. The first film released in November 2021 grossed $402 million worldwide and holds a 47% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite post-credits teases for future storylines, no updates indicate active work on a sequel. In 2024, Kevin Feige also confirmed that there are no plans for it as of now. The decision is likely linked to performance concerns, as the first film didn’t break the bank. Furthermore, Marvel is shifting toward other properties like The Fantastic Four and X-Men.
Thunderbolts* / New Avengers 2
While Thunderbolts* was released this year in May, there has been no confirmation of a sequel or a follow-up under the New Avengers title. Current MCU planning focuses on Phase Six projects such as Avengers: Secret Wars. Marvel has not announced development for a second Thunderbolts* installment. More importantly, Thunderbolts* has officially proven to be a flop at the box office, making just $382 million when the breaking point was around $425 million.
The Incredible Hulk 2
Since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, Marvel Studios has not pursued a direct sequel. Rights issues with Universal Pictures and Hulk’s continued appearances in ensemble films have kept a solo sequel off the slate. The character has featured in Avengers films and Thor: Ragnarok, but no formal plans exist for a standalone Hulk 2, as Marvel still doesn’t seem to have the rights to the character for another solo outing. They don’t have a Sony-Spider-Man-like deal with Universal either.
Ant-Man and the Wasp 4
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania grossed $476 million worldwide since its release and currently holds a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It wasn’t a major box office draw compared to past movies, and it truly began a downward slump through Phase 5. Insider Daniel Richtman suggests that a fourth film is not in development. Furthermore, Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lily have retired from acting. So, it’s unlikely that a sequel will ever happen for it.
Captain Marvel 3
The Marvels grossed $206 million worldwide with a 63% Rotten Tomatoes score, becoming MCU’s biggest flop with the lowest box office intake. Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers, Teyonah Paris’ Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan are expected to return in other MCU projects. But it’s highly unlikely for Captain Marvel 3 to happen after The Marvels bombed.
Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 4
Director James Gunn confirmed he has no plans for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4. The trilogy concluded in 2023, and while individual characters may appear elsewhere, Marvel has not announced a fourth installment.
Honorable Mention – Black Widow 2
No development updates exist for Black Widow 2. The 2021 film served as a prequel and concluded Natasha Romanoff’s storyline, with Marvel shifting focus to Yelena Belova in future appearances. However, with Yelena leading the new Avengers, it’s likely that she’ll stay a member of the Avengers, and not get a solo Black Widow sequel instead.
