If you’re a fan of the royal family, a history buff or just loved binge-watching the successful Netflix TV show The Crown, this is the series to have lined up next on your watchlist.

While The Crown followed the life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II, this series digs further into the past with a focus on Queen Victoria and her 63-year reign. It mostly covers her life and many political responsibilities during the time of the 1830s through to the 1850s.

With Jenna Coleman starring as the royal figure herself, the series takes you through the early chaotic stages of her time as monarch over the United Kingdom.

A viewer shared on Rotten Tomatoes: “Just like The Crown covers Queen Elizabeth II’s life throughout her reign, this series covers Queen Victoria’s. It almost looks like they are twin series full of drama, romance, politics and good historical accuracy.

“The first season covers the early life of Queen Victoria, from her ascension to the throne at the tender age of 18 to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert.”

The show begins with Victoria’s dramatic ascension to the throne when she was just 18 and the first season delves into a dramatised version of her youthful life. This included her alleged interest in Lord Melbourne and her tumultuous marriage to Prince Albert.

As the show unfolds, it also begins to delve into the birth of her first child and successor to the throne, of her firstborn and successor, Princess Victoria.

We watch as the monarch struggles to balance being a wife, a mother and the leader of the country as she slowly evolves into the iconic figure she is remembered as.

Another viewer shared: “It’s Masterpiece Theatre, not a Michael Bay movie, so with those expectations, it’s really a good show. Jenna Coleman does an excellent job portraying the Queen; as for the rest of the cast – excellent. Beautiful sets and scenes are really well done.”

Sharing their love for the show after just one season, an impressed viewer said:”This has absolutely delighted me! Coleman plays a headstrong yet soft Victoria in the most beguiling manner! If season two is half as good as season one, I’ll be so pleased! This is another great masterpiece work!”

Not only does the storyline keep fans entertained as they see the personal turmoil of the queen unfold, it also demonstrates the impact of some major historical events.

For example, the Anglo-Afghan War calamity is touched on, as well as covering the devastation of the famine in Ireland.

Also starring in the series re-telling the events of the time are Tom Hughes as Prince Albert and Rufus Sewell as Lord Melbourne. Joining them on screen in Victoria are Lily Travers as Sophie, Kate Fleetwood as Princess Feodora and Nell Hudson as Nancy Skerrett.

All episodes of Victoria are available to watch across numerous streaming platforms, including ITVX, Netflix and Disney+.
