Matt Damon crashes nemesis Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue, was ‘big fan’ of suspension: ‘The president canceled you’

Key points

  • Matt Damon crashed Jimmy Kimmel’s latest late-night episode in New York.

  • The Good Will Hunting star said he was “a big fan” of Kimmel’s suspension last month.

  • Damon also flirted with the host’s mom, who was in the show’s audience.

Jimmy Kimmel‘s final show in New York had a very special guest: his archnemesis, Matt Damon.

The Jimmy Kimmel Live host’s longtime rival snuck onto the show disguised as Frankie Focus, the new mascot for New York education who was introduced in tandem with the state’s school cellphone ban.

Damon’s identity was obscured at first, as he wore Frankie’s bespectacled green mascot head and talked with Kimmel using a cartoonish voice (presumably performed by a different actor). At first, their conversation seemed unassuming, but Frankie became increasingly hostile.

“Did you get a college degree?” he asked Kimmel.

“Why did you ask me that? No, I didn’t get one,” the host responded.

“Well I could tell from watching your stupid monologue!” the costumed figure said and then asked the audience, “Isn’t he dumb?”

After another rude jab, Kimmel ripped Frankie’s head off to reveal Damon, prompting thunderous applause from the crowd at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House.

Damon then celebrated his successful infiltration of the show, leading Kimmel to mock his Frankie Focus outfit.

“Is this a sex thing? Are you a furry?” he asked condescendingly. “You’re a furry! Dunkin’ Dumbass is a furry, everybody! He’s a furry.”

Damon sheepishly denied Kimmel’s accusation and said he’d only used the costume because he needed to find a way onto the show.

“I know we’ve had our differences over the years, but I wanted to be here tonight for your last show ever,” the Good Will Hunting star said. “I mean, hey guys, we’ve been at this for a long time together — I mean, almost together — for like 23 years. I just wanna say goodbye.”

Puzzled, Kimmel corrected his unwelcome guest. “This isn’t my last show ever,” he said. “We have a show Monday.”

Damon appeared befuddled. “But the president canceled you — which I was a big fan of, by the way,” he said, referring to misconceptions about the fate of Live during Kimmel’s temporary suspension from ABC. President Trump did falsely claim that Kimmel’s show was “canceled,” and the suspension commenced after his appointee to lead the FCC, Brendan Carr, called for ABC affiliate groups to preempt Live.

“When he said you had zero ratings and no talent, I was like, ‘I’ve been saying that for years,'” Damon continued, quoting Trump’s celebration of Kimmel’s temporary demise.

“We didn’t get canceled,” Kimmel clarified. “We were off the air for three nights.”

Disappointed, Damon replied, “Is there some kind of appeals process?”

After Kimmel said there isn’t an appeals process, Damon swore, “F—!,” which prompted the host to ask, “You kiss your mother with that mouth?”

Damon shot back, “No, I kiss your mother with this mouth.” He then shouted out Kimmel’s mom, who was in the audience. “What’s up, Joan? What’s up? Hey, girl!”

Kimmel then forced Damon to leave, but not before the actor grabbed Kimmel’s mom on the way out.

“Come on, Joan, come on,” Damon said. “Let’s let your wittle boy do his wittle show.”

Then he threw in one last jab. “I was lying about the costume,” he said. “It is a sex thing.”

The Kimmel-Damon “feud” dates back to 2005, when the Live host ended an episode by saying, “Apologies to Matt Damon, but we ran out of time” — despite the fact that the Saving Private Ryan star was never scheduled to appear on the show and the two had never met.

Kimmel and Damon have playfully traded barbs over the past two decades since that moment, roping others like Ben Affleck, Sarah Silverman, and Tom Brady into their shenanigans.
