“The Batman” director Matt Reeves knew as soon as he started seeing screen tests from Colin Farrell that there was something more to The Penguin character that could be mined, even for as small a part of “The Batman” as he was.
“[Farrell] started sending me when I was in London in prep these little videos he was making of himself, and I was like, who is that? There was such a burning life coming into being, and he’s an incredible actor,” Reeves told IndieWire on the red carpet at the Emmys, where he’s nominated for his work on “The Penguin.”

The rest is history, and those videos set of a chain of events that led to Farrell’s Penguin getting his own HBO Max series. And in Reeves’s mind, Farrell’s Penguin may not be the only character in Reeves’ Gotham who may be deserving of their own spinoff series and expanded treatment.
“I totally do, we’ve talked about it,” he said. But he added the priority now was finishing “The Penguin” — and of course getting “The Batman 2” prepped. The film will begin shooting this spring, and he says star Robert Pattinson is “super excited” about the script.
“That’s where the priorities have been,” he said. “These conversations may or may not… look I’m not in control of DC, and I can only tell you what I’d love to do, and there are things they know we would love to do, and those conversations may begin again when it’s appropriate.”
When exactly “The Batman 2” would hit the screen has been a point of some consternation among fans eager to see Pattinson become the Dark Knight yet again. DC head James Gunn said in June before Reeves had submitted the script that people need to “get off Matt’s nuts” and let him deliver the script in his own time.”
“Let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it,” Gunn previously said. “That’s just the way it is. He doesn’t owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”
Reeves did finally turn in the script, and the movie is back on schedule for a release that’s expected in 2027. Reeves told us on the red carpet that the delay was a combination of “some personal, some strikes” complications, but he’s excited to be diving back into the world of Bruce Wayne and Batman and believes the sequel will be better than his first entry. There’s also the chance that “The Penguin” itself could return for a second season.
“The Penguin” has won nine Emmys so far, including for star Cristin Milioti this evening.
