Matthew McConaughey Shares Family Estrangement Details

The Oscar-winning actor told People magazine that he didn’t speak with his mom for nearly 10 years, after she started sharing a bit too much with the press.

“We had about an eight-year period where I had to have short conversations with her on our Sunday phone calls because she was sharing a lot of that information,” the “True Detective” actor said in an article published last week.

“I’d tell her something on Sunday between son and mom, and Tuesday I’d read about it in the news or see it in the local paper. She couldn’t help herself,” he added.

“We were on a hiatus,” Kay said, as Matthew smiled and shared that the two “had some boring conversations on Sunday. I wouldn’t tell you shit.”

“I took people through the house and said, ‘Well, this is where Matthew slept,’” Kay told the outlet. “Someone called him and said, ‘Are you watching what your mama’s doing?’ But I was so proud that I was just telling the world.”

It took the two some time before the actor said he “got stable enough with my own position and fame that I was like, you know what? My mom can say whatever the hell she wants,” the actor shared.

Matthew said the two then started to “go to red carpets” and his mom would ask him if there were “any rules” to what she could say.

“I was like ‘No rules at all. Tell all the raunchiest things you want.’ And she did and it was fine. It’s much more fun now,” he added.

“I was calling my mom at that time, after I’d gotten famous, needing to talk to my mom,” McConaughey said during an appearance on “The Howard Stern Show” back in 2020. “And my mom was not the only one on the phone. The woman that was on the phone was a fan ― of my fame.”

The actor said it was “a sad time” for him, but the two were able to repair things.

“There’s always forgiveness. I just tried to bide my time,” he added.
