Matthew Perry’s doctor, Dr. Salvador Plasencia, issued a remorseful four-word statement as he was sentenced to two and a half years behind bars after pleading guilty to supplying the late actor with drugs.

On Wednesday, December 3, United States District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett issued Dr. Plasencia a 30-month sentence after he was charged in the death of Perry. Additionally, the 44-year-old doctor was fined $5,600 and ordered to be immediately remanded to federal custody.

“I failed Mr. Perry,” he said in a powerful four-word comment after the decision. Dr. Plasencia went on to add, “I failed him. I failed his family. There is no excuse. I’m just so sorry.”

As he expressed his remorse, Dr. Plasencia was seen breaking down in tears inside the California courtroom, standing before Perry’s loved ones.

During the trial, the judge said that Dr. Plasencia was not responsible for giving the fatal dose of ketamine to Perry, but stated that his actions led to the star going down a winding road toward his death. This comes as Dr. Plasencia previously pleaded guilty to four counts of distribution of ketamine during a hearing on July 23.

“He has already lost his medical license, his clinic, and his career,” they wrote. “He has also been viciously attacked in the media and threatened by strangers to the point where his family has moved out of state for their safety.”

Dr. Plasencia is the first person sentenced among the five people convicted in connection with the Friends stars’ 2023 overdose death. The other four individuals who were charged were Jasveen Sangha aka the “Ketamine Queen,” Dr. Mark Chavez, Erik Fleming, and Kenneth Iwamasa.

Perry died at the age of 53 years old from the acute effects of ketamine, with drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine as contributing factors on October 28, 2023. The actor was found inside his hot tub at his Los Angeles home at the time of his passing, and his death was later ruled an accident by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office.
