Ex Deo’s new album is officially done, with Maurizio Iacono confirming the news on his Instagram page. Recording, mixing, and mastering have been handled by François Dagenais at his studio, and even though the title is under wraps, it’s expected that the band will embrace the hand-painted aesthetic as seen in their album, The Immortal Wars.
The Announcement Comes After their 2025 EP Release
In 2025, the band released their EP, Year of the Four Emperors, which explored one of the worst and bloodiest periods in Rome. The album has a song named after Galba, Otho, Vitellius, and Vespasian, who all ruled in quick succession of each other.
The album reinforces the fact that the band is still heavily focused on their Roman aesthetic and how they are looking to explore new narratives within history. Rather than using Roman history as a purely visual inspiration, the band has tried to incorporate the sounds of Rome into their music, blending melodic death metal with soundscapes of that era.
Vocalist Maurizio Iacono often visits Rome as a way to help himself with the creative process. According to an interview, it’s his aim to show how life two thousand years ago correlates to now and how he wants to try and inspire people through his own love of history.
Year of the Four Emperors received positive reviews from critics and fans, with some citing the production as being the best the band has done. Even though some felt as though the four-track EP left them wanting more, it served as a valuable history lesson for those who want to learn more about the era, with spoken narratives woven into the EP to give fans a more immersive experience.
