When one remake doesn’t work, why not try it again? Everybody knows about the popular ’80s show Miami Vice, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. The series was iconic for its sense of style and really does encapsulate the ’80s.
In 2006, legendary director Michael Mann decided to reboot the franchise in movie form with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in the lead. Mann was an executive producer on the original series, so he was the perfect director to put in charge.
Unfortunately, the film flopped at the box office and got poor reviews. Nearly 20 years later, Universal Pictures is going to try to reboot the franchise again, this time with Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski at the helm.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has set the release date for August 6, 2027. Production is supposed to start next year, and they are currently looking to cast the film.
It’s safe to say that we should expect a couple of big names to lead the Miami Vice reboot. THR noted that the series will be set in the ’80s and is inspired by the first season of the show.
Kosinski is one of the hottest directors in Hollywood right now, and recently directed the critical and commercial hit F1. He’s clearly keeping busy. In addition to Miami Vice, he’s doing a UFO thriller for Apple and could get to work soon on a third Top Gun movie.
