Medium Build has shared his new single ‘Home Depot’.
The American songwriter’s ace 2024 album ‘Country’ brought him success, but Medium Build at times struggled with the pressures that brought. As a result, new album ‘King of Having Fun’ – due on September 4th – is a much more internal experience, at times dealing with mental health.
New song ‘Home Depot’ taps into 90s pop-country influences – Medium Build spends half his time in Nashville, after all – blending this with a delicate character sketch of a man who rejects his emotions, and the impact that has on those around him.
We all know those types of people – men who spend time focussing on external signs of progress, the car, the house, the haircut, as opposed to advancing their inner lives.
It’s a song of quiet frustration, one that softly condemns those actions while offering a note of sympathy to those drawn into their orbit.
“’Home Depot’ is about the man in your life more focused on the external than internal. The lawn is manicured and the mustache is trimmed. He appears as stepdads or uncles. Some of us know him as father or husband. He works hard and plays hard, although work is often also his play,” says the songwriter. “When I set out to write this song I wanted to commiserate with the women stuck in the orbits of these men. I was curious how we stay stuck to these guys. As I dug in, what I found was a humanisation of the Steve’s in my life and a realisation that even on my best day, I am really just like him.”
