On her late-night television debut, country star Megan Moroney admitted something very shocking.

The 27-year-old country singer appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyerson Tuesday and discussed her most recent trip to Las Vegas, how her singing career took off while she was a college student at the University of Georgia and her single, “6 Months Later.” She also talked about the inspiration behind her most popular song, titled “Tennessee Orange,” which has over 425 million streams on Spotify.

Moroney was born and raised in a family that was die-hard Georgia Bulldogs fans, and she attended UGA herself from 2016 to 2020. She originally was an accounting major at the Terry School of Business, but switched her degree to marketing and received a certificate in music business after opening for country singer Chase Rice during her freshman year of college. After graduating, she moved to Nashville to pursue her music career.

After the singer explained how she got her start in music during college, late-night host Seth Meyers asked her about the origins of her hit song, “Tennessee Orange,” which is about her falling in love with someone who cheered for the Tennessee Volunteers instead of the Bulldogs — a huge deal for someone who deeply follows the NCAA Southeastern Conference Football (SEC).

“So when I moved to Nashville, I found myself wearing a Volunteers shirt, and I remember looking in the mirror, going ‘My mom would absolutely kill me right now if she saw me in this gaudy orange,'” Moroney explained. “So then I thought, that would make a really good love song. Like ‘I like this dude enough to not wear Georgia Red.'”

After explaining the story, she sighed and quickly said, “Yeah, I got death threats over that song,” which made Meyers and the live audience laugh.

Moroney released her first single, “Wonder” in 2021, followed by her debut EP, Pistol Made of Roses. In 2022, she released “Tennessee Orange,” which went viral on social media and skyrocketed her career, earning her a CMA nomination for Song of the Year. In 2023, she released her debut album Lucky, featuring fan favorites like “I’m Not Pretty” and “Girl in the Mirror.” The next year, she released her second studio album, Am I Okay? and has been on tour this past year to promote the record. While on tour, the country singer released two singles: “6 Months Later” and “Who’s Your Daddy?”.

The singer announced on Instagram on Wednesday that the Am I Okay? Tour Live Album will be released at midnight. Her last shows for the tour will take place in Dallas this upcoming weekend.

Fans can listen to “6 Months Later,” “Tennessee Orange” and her upcoming live album on all streaming platforms.
