A royal commentator says Meghan Markle and Prince Harry should not “deserve to be rewarded” for their conduct since stepping away from Royal duties.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a joint appearance at Project Healthy Minds’ World Mental Health Day Gala in New York City on Thursday.
The pair received the “Humanitarians of the Year” honor at the event.
The recognition was presented to the duke, 41, and his wife, 44, in acknowledgment of their efforts through the Archewell Foundation.
Yet while the duo celebrated receiving the accolade that highlights their mental health advocacy work, critics question whether they merited such recognition.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams stands among those who argue the couple’s conduct since departing Royal duties five years ago, particularly their public criticism of the monarchy through interviews and their Netflix documentary series, shouldn’t be celebrated.
Speaking to UK news show, GB News, Mr Fitzwilliams stated: “The Sussexes’ work to help those suffering from mental health problems is, of course, to be welcomed.
“However, despite their radiating positivity in their public pronouncements, Harry has savaged his family publicly, which has caused a deep rift, and Meghan has no contact with hers.

“This is not behaviour which deserves to be rewarded, especially as the only reason their pronouncements get wide coverage is their royal links.”
The remark is thought to be a response to the couple’s criticism of their Royal kin and the resulting turmoil they’ve caused within the Firm.
This includes their explosive 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, where they leveled accusations against the Royal Family, as well as their 2022 Netflix docuseries, Harry and Meghan.
Prince Harry‘s 2023 memoir, Spare, also contained critiques of the monarchy and disclosed family moments that many believe should have remained private.
Mr. Fitzwilliams also noted the “ultimate irony” of the couple receiving the award, given that President Donald Trump has initiated efforts to bring peace to Gaza.
