Meghan Markle and Prince Harry recently embarked on a trip to Australia, which many have dubbed a “quasi royal tour”. The Sussexes’ brisk four-day visit had all the hallmarks of a traditional royal tour, rivalling King Charles’s visit to the US. Their itinerary was packed as they indulged in the Indigenous culture, Australian sport, multiple good causes and a trip to the National War Memorial.
The Sussexes looked to be in their element, high-fiving fans and taking selfies; one could mistake them for being part of The Firm. They were met with warmth, with large crowds of people lining up to greet them. Meghan listened intently to survivors of the Bondi Beach attack, while Harry spoke powerfully at a summit on mental health about life as a royal after the death of his mother, Princess Diana. But there is an issue which the couple seem to have overlooked.
Prince Harry and Meghan are no longer working royals. The Duke, however, has insisted that he “will always be part of the royal family.” While I don’t doubt that, the Sussexes’ latest move is enough to rub one royal the wrong way, scuppering any chances of a reconciliation, and it’s not King Charles.
If the latest reports are anything to go by, Meghan and Harry’s visit to Australia has allegedly fuelLed further tension with Prince William, his estranged brother. Despite Harry telling the BBC last year that he “would love a reconciliation,” it ultimately backfired.
The Duke of Sussex even spoke about giving up his former role as a senior working royal while at the InterEdge Summit while Down Under.
“I was like, ‘I don’t want this job. I don’t want this role — wherever this is headed, I don’t like it,’” Harry said at the time, with sources claiming his comments reportedly didn’t sit well with the Prince of Wales, according to US Weekly.
Harry and Charles had a positive private meeting in September 2025, but the King’s refusal to meet during his US tour can also be interpreted as a step backwards for the Sussexes. It has even been indicated that the pair’s fractured relationship shows no signs of being mended and that it’s now at an “all time low”.
The optics don’t look good when a meeting on US soil with Trump takes precedence over any family healing. From the outside, none of this bodes well for the Sussexes. Every move the couple makes appears to go against a positive family reunion.
Harry and Meghan have to build a life for themselves away from royal duty. But the lines have blurred, causing confusion when, in one breath, you claim not to want the job but still indulge in royal activity.
