The Sussexes have responded to explosive claims made in Tom Bower’s new book about their role in the Invictus Games

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have issued a strongly-worded statement in response to excerpts from a new royal book containing explosive allegations about the couple being published online. The forthcoming book, Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, written by Tom Bower, explores the ongoing tensions between the Sussexes and the Windsor family, with extracts appearing in The Times Magazine.

The publication also reveals alleged internal concerns, including those raised by former Invictus Foundation chief Dominic Reid, that sport and athletes were being sidelined and that the Games had become “the Harry and Meghan show”. It references poor attendance figures and claims crowd “padding” for the cameras, whilst suggesting that competitors and their families were being overshadowed by carefully choreographed photo opportunities.

Responding to The Times’ serialisation of Bower’s latest book, a spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex hit back: “Mr Bower’s commentary has long crossed the line from criticism into fixation. This is someone who has publicly stated, ‘the monarchy in fact depends on actually obliterating the Sussexes from our state of life,’ language that speaks for itself.

“He has made a career out of constructing ever more elaborate theories about people he does not know and has never met. Those interested in facts will look elsewhere; those seeking deranged conspiracy and melodrama know exactly where to find him.”

In his most recent book, Mr Bower alleges that Meghan Markle had a sharp 11-word retort for Prince William during a peace-making meeting between the two couples following the Sussexes’ honeymoon in 2018. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Prince and Princess of Wales were once close-knit, earning the nickname “Fab Four” shortly after Meghan joined the Royal Family, but their relationship quickly soured, the Mirror reports.

Mr Bower delves into this peace-making encounter, claiming that Meghan “snapped” at William, stating: “If you don’t mind, get your finger out of my face.” He records that the 2018 reconciliation meeting between the brothers and their wives had “spun out of control.”

He wrote: “William’s dislike of Meghan had been obvious after his warning to Harry before their engagement. ‘It’s gone too quickly,’ William had said about the speed of Harry’s relationship with ‘the American actress’.”

The publication also examines Queen Camilla’s reported dislike of Meghan, suggesting that the Queen allegedly told a friend that the Duchess had manipulated Harry.

Furthermore, Mr Bower makes some explosive claims in the book about how Meghan allegedly attempted to use Prince Harry’s Invictus Games platform as a “global stage for genuine admiration and cheering fans”.

He writes: “Meghan needed a global stage for genuine admiration and cheering fans.

“To her good fortune, Harry agreed that she could star at the Invictus Games, which he was about to open in Canada.

“Just before flying up to Vancouver in a private jet, she alerted her Instagram followers.”

He alleged that Harry and Meghan “insisted” on being called “Ma’am and Sir” and claimed organisers perceived the couple as “pushy.”

He suggested Nick Booth, the chief executive of the Games, had been “parachuted into the post” following the removal of two Canadian executives who “resented” Harry and Meghan.

He claimed the former executives viewed Meghan as “a distraction from the injured veterans,” with one reportedly stating: “She’s bling, not rehabilitation.

“Harry can’t decide whether Invictus should be styled on the Olympics or a more intimate warrior games embracing the military family.”
