Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have landed down under, and it sounds like they are taking a new approach when it comes to their royal titles.
The change was noticed on Day 1 when the Duchess of Sussex leaned away from any formalities, according to The Telegraph. At the Australian National Veterans’ Art Museum on April 14, the royal couple was asked how they would like to be addressed.
Harry answered first, “However you like.”
Meghan responded, “Call me Meg?”
That casualness continued to their children’s hospital visit in Melbourne when a staffer asked the same question to one of the Sussexes’ handlers.
“Harry and Meghan is fine,” he confirmed. “They’re pretty relaxed.”
Even though the British tabloids are dubbing Harry and Meghan’s trip as a “quasi-royal tour,” the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are proving them wrong. They left the private jet behind and joined the rest of the world, flying business class on a commercial carrier and traveling without a police escort.
What is the reason for this new folksy type of approach? Well, let’s refresh your memory with what happened last July. In London, the Sussexes’ PR team, then led by Meredith Maines and their U.K. PR representative Liam Maguire, met with King Charles III’s communications secretary, Tobyn Andreae, per The Mail on Sunday.
According to a Daily Mail source, the meeting for Harry was about “deconflicting” the issues with his family. One of the biggest achievements was agreeing to “draw up a ‘grid’ of his activities and sharing them with Buckingham Palace, and by extension with Kensington Palace.” The insider explained further, “…If the Royal Family have full sight of his movements, they can at least plan accordingly. It’s a significant gesture.”
It appears that is exactly what Meghan and Harry are doing during their Australian visit. And, it’s also a reminder that the Duke of Sussex has been waving the peace flag for some time now.
“There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore,” he told the BBC in May 2025, “I don’t know how much longer my father has.”
