Meghan Markle by any other name would still be Meghan.
For Americans, the British royal family’s nomenclature is an ongoing head scratcher. With dukedoms, titles and inheritances all playing a factor, it can be hard to understand the naming conventions. Allow Markle — whose marriage to Prince Harry brought her into the fold — to explain.
“When I got married I changed my name,” she told Emily Chang during a recent sit down for Bloomberg shared August 26. “But it’s a complicated one for people to understand because a last name is not typical in that construct.”
In fact, when it comes to the moniker of “Sussex,” while Markle conceded that the name can be used “loosely” when thinking of a last name, in reality, “It’s a dukedom. That’s the truth of it. My legal name is Meghan Duchess of Sussex.”
But for those royal family aficionados who may remember the “Suits” alum referring to herself as “Meghan Sussex” in “With Love, Meghan” season one, Markle — who shares Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, with Harry — has an answer.

“But Sussex for us works as our family name,” she explained, “and it’s the name that we share with our children.”
And if anyone is still trying to put the royal pieces together, you’re not alone. As the 44-year-old admitted, “I get it because I’m American. I went there and I started to understand, then you come back and as an American, you go, ‘I’m so confused.’”
Markle also addressed the seeming obsession with her name and role since she married into the family.
“What I learned about myself is no matter what my name is or what people call me, I’m still the same person,” she said. “That didn’t change who I am. And maybe that’s probably the biggest distinguishing factor.”
But an understanding of royal conventions isn’t the only thing Markle picked up across the pond before she and Harry stepped down as senior royals and moved to California in 2020, she misses the radio.
“Honestly,” she admitted to season two “With Love, Meghan” guest Tan France, “one of the things I miss the most about the U.K. is the radio station Magic.”
In response, the “Queer Eye” host teased, “Sorry to say this to you publicly, but that’s such a grandma station.”
A categorization Markle is happy to accept. “I’ll be that grandma,” she laughed. “My favorite station in my car is called ‘Mom Jeans.’”
