Although the Sussexes originally wanted to be “part-time” royals, their wish was not granted by the late Queen Elizabeth and both sides agreed that they should carry on with their lives in America without using their HRH titles, which they still retain, for commercial gain. And despite the frosty rift that has been building between them, it has been claimed that the Duchess attempted to deal with it privately.
A royal commentator claimed that Meghan sent a letter to the monarch “wanting answers”.
Royal expert Neil Sean said on his YouTube channel in 2023: “Meghan Markle wants some answers from His Majesty the King.
“She tried to set up a meeting with him, she sent him a letter and wanted a one-to-one to explain exactly the problems she’s encountered ever since becoming a member of the British monarchy.”
Mr Sean added that the Duchess allegedly complained that a different set of rules applied, at the time, to Sarah Ferguson, who could still use her now-axed Duchess of York title to advance her writing career.
He said: “The thing that really riles Meghan is that Fergie pops up on things like the ITV daytime show This Morning, Loose Women and billing herself as the Duchess of York, selling books and possibly doing adverts all under the Royal Family.
“Meghan and Harry seemingly don’t understand why it’s a different rule for her.”
The Duchess sparked further controversy last year when she appeared in a podcast interview where an image was shared by the host and Meghan’s friend, Jamie Kern Lima, showing a gift basket from last year with a monogrammed card reading: “With Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex”.
The move raised eyebrows as the couple had mutually agreed not to use their titles for commercial gain after quitting the Royal Family.
They still retain the styles, with Harry having had his since birth, but they are essentially held in abeyance.
