Meghan Markle hasn’t shied away from sharing her criticism of Donald Trump over the years.

The Duchess of Sussex initially voiced her strong opposition to the controversial President back in 2016 during his first campaign for the White House against Hillary Clinton. Since that time, the former actress and Trump have engaged in an ongoing exchange of criticism, and while Trump has expressed admiration for The Royal Family, it’s evident that Meghan and Prince Harry aren’t among his favored associates.

During her time on Suits in 2016, Meghan described Trump as “misogynistic” and “divisive” while appearing on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore. Discussing the race between Trump and Clinton, the Duchess issued a stark warning to American voters. “You don’t really want that kind of world,” she cautioned viewers, urging them not to support Trump. This marked the beginning of their ongoing tension. It comes as a lip reader revealed Prince Harry’s five-word ‘instruction’ to Meghan on their recent visit to Vancouver.

By 2019, Meghan had established herself as a prominent Royal Family member, having wed Harry the previous year, reports the Mirror.

During Trump’s State Visit to the UK that year, he had arranged meetings with several members of the royal family. The timing overlapped with Meghan’s maternity leave as she awaited the arrival of Prince Archie, preventing any encounter with the President.

Despite this, Trump remarked that Meghan was “very nice” and called Harry a “terrific guy”. Just one year later, Harry and Meghan stunned the world by revealing their plan to step back as senior working royals and pursue financial independence.

They initially relocated to Canada, where his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth, served as head of state. However, within months, they chose to settle in California, Meghan’s home state.

Concerns quickly arose about who would fund their continuous security detail, considering Harry’s prominent place in the Royal line of succession. Trump had firm views on the matter and made it clear that American taxpayers would not bear the cost.

Instead of releasing an official White House statement, he turned to X, then called Twitter.

In March 2020, he declared, “I am a great friend and admirer of the Queen and the United Kingdom. It was reported that Harry and Meghan, who left the Kingdom, would reside permanently in Canada. Now they have left Canada for the U.S. however, the U.S. will not pay for their security protection. They must pay!” Harry and Meghan, however, had never expected American taxpayers to cover the expense.

Following Harry and Meghan’s move to California, Trump faced reelection at the conclusion of his first presidential term, competing against President Joe Biden.. Throughout the campaign, the Sussexes featured in a video encouraging Americans to ‘vote against hate speech’.

While the couple didn’t name anyone specifically, their comments were widely seen as backing Biden over Trump and potentially violating the Sandringham Summit agreement established when they stepped back from Royal duties in 2020. Trump later responded, saying he was “no fan” of Meghan and told Harry, “I wish a lot of luck to Harry, he’s going to need it.”

Following his 2020 election defeat, Trump criticized Harry in multiple interviews when questioned about the Royal Family. Speaking with Nigel Farage in 2021, he claimed Harry’s marriage had “ruined his relationship with his family” and that it “hurts the Queen”.

More recently, Harry became embroiled in controversy over his US visa, which permits him to reside in California. After revealing his use of marijuana, cocaine, and psychedelic mushrooms in his memoir Spare, the conservative Heritage Foundation filed a lawsuit demanding the US Government release Harry’s visa application records to determine whether his drug use had been properly disclosed.

Prior to a court decision in the case, Trump attacked the Biden administration for keeping Harry’s immigration paperwork confidential to “protect Harry.”

He told the Express US, “I wouldn’t protect him. He betrayed the Queen. That’s unforgivable. He would be on his own if it was down to me.”

He informed Farage that there would be “no special privileges” for Harry and that “appropriate action” would be taken if it was discovered he had been dishonest. In his explosive memoir, Harry admitted that cocaine “didn’t do anything for me”, adding: “Marijuana is different, that actually really did help me.”

He also shares an encounter with magic mushrooms, stating: “I stared at the bin. It stared back. ‘What-staring?’ Then it became… a head. I stepped on the pedal, and the head opened its mouth. A huge open grin.”

US visa applications specifically inquire about an individual’s current and past drug use, which can negatively affect the application process. Extensive drug use can result in application denial; however, immigration officers exercise their discretion considering a variety of factors.

It comes after King Charles was reduced to tears after overhearing Prince William’s private conversation.
