Meghan Markle’s team demanded a “tight scrutiny of ticketing” for the ‘One Young World’s’ conference in Manchester in 2022, according to a new book. Meghan was invited to speak at the conference, which brought young leaders together to discuss global challenges.
Tom Bower’s royal book, ‘Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family’, explores what happened behind the scenes of the event. He writes: “In Manchester, Meghan’s publicist demanded tight scrutiny of ticketing to exclude any protesters, a ban on spectators standing outside the venue, and all journalists were to be excluded from the hall.
“Only Omid Scobie, a trusted author, and the photographer Misan Harriman were to be given access to the event. Harriman’s photos would be published only in Town & Country magazine. Not the mainstream media.”
Mr Bower further writes: “Any protest that the media restrictions would damage Meghan’s request to be globally positioned as a philanthropist was dismissed. Risks were unacceptable to the Duchess.”
During the event, the Duchess of Sussex gave a moving, vulnerable speech that saw her candidly admit to feeling undeserving of her seat at the table when she first joined as a counsellor for the event back in 2014.
One Young World’s summit plays host to over 2,000 young leaders representing more than 190 countries, who gather in the host city for influential speeches, panels, workshops and networking sessions.
Bower’s book has received criticism from the couple, after extracts were serialised in The Times.
A spokesperson said in a statement: “Mr Bower’s commentary has long crossed the line from criticism into fixation.
“This is someone who has publicly stated, ‘the monarchy in fact depends on actually obliterating the Sussexes from our state of life,’ language that speaks for itself. He has made a career out of constructing ever more elaborate theories about people he does not know and has never met.
“Those interested in facts will look elsewhere; those seeking deranged conspiracy and melodrama know exactly where to find him.”
