Mel C has revisited the Spice Girls row that almost ended her place in the band before the public even knew who they were.
Metro reported that the singer, real name Melanie Chisholm, spoke about a 1996 BRIT Awards argument with Victoria Beckham during a new appearance on The Louis Theroux Podcast.
Mel C said the fallout left her terrified that she had ruined everything, because of the blunt comment she made to Beckham during a night out before Wannabe launched the group into global fame.
The Row Happened at the 1996 BRIT Awards
Mel C said the incident happened at the BRIT Awards in 1996, months before the Spice Girls released Wannabe. At the time, they were signed and known inside the industry, but they had not yet become household names.
According to the new reports on her Louis Theroux interview, Mel C said the group had been enjoying a major night out when the mood changed while they were trying to find their car.
She said she turned around and told Beckham to “f*** off”.
Mel C Said She Did Not Wake Up Thinking She Was in Trouble
Mel C said she went home, went to bed and woke up the next morning thinking the night had been fun. She said she was living with Mel B at the time, while Geri Halliwell also lived nearby in Watford.
That was when she realized the others had taken the incident far more seriously than she had. Reports on the podcast appearance said Mel B and Geri were angry with her behavior when she got up the next morning.
In earlier interviews, Mel C said she had been drinking, became “lairy” and upset Beckham at the BRIT Awards before being warned that another incident could cost her place in the group.
Mel C said manager Simon Fuller called her in and told her clearly that if anything like that happened again, she would be out of the band.
The Incident Changed the Way Mel C Saw Herself
In earlier interviews, she said the threat made her become much harder on herself. Sky News reported that Mel C told Desert Island Discs she began policing her behavior because she felt she could not relax without risking everything.
Mel C has also spoken openly about depression and disordered eating during and after the Spice Girls years.
The Confession Comes as Spice Girls Nostalgia Is Back Again
The group’s debut single Wannabe turns 30 this month, and fans have been watching for any sign that all five members could mark the milestone together.
PEOPLE reported earlier this year that Mel C confirmed there would be no 2026 reunion tour, even though she said the members remain in communication and she still hopes the group will do something together in the future.
The same report also noted that October 2026 marks 30 years since the group’s debut album, Spice
Mel C Still Says Once a Spice Girl, Always a Spice Girl
BANG Premier reported that she said the Spice Girls have regained full ownership of the 1997 film Spice World and are preparing to make it available again.
She said the film is not currently available on streaming because rights issues had left it scattered among different owners. According to BANG Premier, Mel C said the group now fully owns it and plans to present it again in the “not-too-distant future.”
