The April 28 gathering, held during the monarch’s four-day visit to the U.S., followed long-established norms associated with royal state banquets. However, both Melania and Tiffany wore strapless gowns — an uncommon choice for formal occasions tied to British royal etiquette.

Tiffany Trump’s outfit draws scrutiny

Tiffany, who’s President Donald Trump’s only child with second wife Marla Maples, attended the dinner in a pastel yellow strapless gown featuring a sweetheart neckline. The dress, identified as a Miss Rosier design, included a pleated bodice and skirt. She paired the look with a diamond necklace and styled her hair in loose curls. Tiffany also shared glimpses of her outfit in photos shared on social media, including a mirror selfie with her husband, Michael Boulos, who wore a traditional black tailcoat with a white bow tie. While not explicitly banned, strapless gowns are generally discouraged at formal royal events, where more conservative silhouettes are preferred.

Royal dress code sets strict expectations

State banquets involving British royalty typically follow the “white tie decorations” standard, regarded as the most formal of all royal dress codes. This code, often referred to as full evening dress, extends beyond standard white tie by incorporating ceremonial elements such as sashes and honors. Tiffany was not alone in drawing scrutiny. Melania also chose a strapless design, wearing a delphinium pink silk gown by Christian Dior Haute Couture. She paired the look with off-white suede opera gloves by Dior and matching pumps. While her styling aligned with the elegance expected at a state dinner, the strapless cut similarly stood apart from traditional royal preferences. The choice by both women highlighted a more modern interpretation of formalwear at an event rooted in longstanding protocol.

The visit carries broader diplomatic significance as reports say the British royals’ trip is intended to reinforce U.S.-U.K. relations at a time of geopolitical strain, including tensions linked to Iran.

In the days preceding the visit, Trump lashed out at the U.K. over its digital services tax on U.S. technology companies and threatened to implement new tariffs. “We’ve been looking at it, and we can meet that very easily by just putting a big tariff on the U.K., so they better be careful. If they don’t drop the tax, we’ll probably put a big tariff on the U.K.,” he said.
