‘Melania’ trailer – The Trumps return to White House in documentary
Melania Trump is the subject of the documentary “Melania,” which covers the 20 days leading up to President Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration.
Unfortunately for Melania Trump, the first lady’s big-screen debut won’t be hitting all cinemas.
The former model and wife of President Donald Trump‘s new documentary, “Melania,” has been pulled from theaters in South Africa after the film’s distributor, Filmfinity, abruptly canceled its release, according to The New York Times.
“Based on recent developments, we’ve taken the decision to not go ahead with a theatrical release in territory,” Thobashan Govindarajulu, head of sales and marketing for Filmfinity, told the outlet in a Jan. 28 statement, declining to provide further details on what led to the cancellation.
The documentary, which was released on Friday, Jan. 30, is reportedly expected to be distributed in over 20 countries by FilmNation Entertainment.
USA TODAY has reached out to Filmfinity and the White House for comment.
“Melania” explores the 20 days before the first lady returned to the White House following President Trump‘s second inauguration on Jan. 20, 2025. The movie, directed by disgraced filmmaker Brett Ratner, delves into “the complexities of the White House transition” as she “reenters public life with her family,” according to the film logline.
“With exclusive footage capturing critical meetings, private conversations and never-before-seen environments, ‘Melania’ showcases Mrs. Trump’s return to one of the world’s most powerful roles,” the logline reads.
On Thursday, Melania Trump, accompanied by President Trump, hit the red carpet at the Trump Kennedy Center for the film’s Washington, D.C., premiere. Melania, 55, wore a sleek, buttoned skirt suit and slim belt from Dolce & Gabbana, while the president, 79, donned a standard navy-blue suit with a burgundy tie.
The premiere celebration came amid rising backlash across the country to the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement techniques after two U.S. citizens were fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis in recent weeks.
Melania Trump reflected on her own immigrant past during an interview with USA TODAY at the premiere. The first lady moved to the United States from Slovenia in 1996 to work as a model. She gained citizenship in 2006.
“I’m an immigrant; I’m coming from a different country,” the first lady said. “I’m very proud to be an American citizen.”
“Melania” is in theaters now. Prime Video will stream the movie following its theatrical run.
