In Bangkok, Thailand, Fatima Bosch Fernández was crowned Miss Universe 2025.
Fatima, also known as Miss Mexico, came in first place, as Miss Thailand, Praveenar Singh, was runner-up, Miss Venezuela, Stephany Abasali, was in third, Miss Philippines, Ma Ahista Manalo, came in fourth, and Miss Cote d’Ivoire, Olivia Yace, placed fifth.
Miss Mexico was at the center of a controversy earlier this month regarding a pre-pageant event. Pageant organizer and Thai media mogul, Nawat Itsaragrasil, yelled at her in front of the other contestants after she didn’t post promotional content on her social media.
Fatima fought back, leading Nawat to call security and threaten other pageant contestants with disqualification if they supported her. She left the room along with other contestants who supported her.
The video of the altercation and subsequent solidarity went viral, prompting many people to condemn Nawat’s actions.
After Fatima’s win, the Miss Universe Organization wrote on social media that “her grace, strength, and radiant spirit captured the hearts of the world.”
While many Mexicans were happy that Fatima won, others thought she only took home first place because of the controversy and shared their thoughts on social media.
“Next year, whoever walks out will win,” one person wrote. Another added, “They had to crown her to make up for injustice earlier to save Miss Universe!”
