Michael B. Jordan is finally getting his just due for his acclaimed turn in “Sinners.”
At Sunday’s Actor Awards, the movie star was thrilled to take home the honor for Best Male Actor in a Leading Role, jokingly calling it “pretty cool.” The award marks Jordan’s first major solo win for his dual performance as the Smoke-Stack twins in Ryan Coogler’s acclaimed horror flick.
“I don’t even know where to begin. I wasn’t expecting this at all,” Jordan started in his acceptance speech. “I’m so honored and privileged to be nominated in categories with people and actors and humans that I love.”
“This ride has been unbelievable,” he added.
Jordan went on to thank SAG-AFTRA and his peers for “welcoming me in and making me feel seen” before reflecting on what he thought of the union as a kid, before his acting career took off.
“I thought it was this club that I want to be in so bad, but you had to get vouchers, and depending on how many lines you had in an episode or a show would determine if you got that membership or not,” he continued. “I remember watching all the other actors that I looked up to being a part of that club … those guys that were on stage with the awards and the nice suits, talking, being in fancy places like that. That’s what I always wanted.”
The “Sinners” star went on to thank his mom for supporting his ambitions growing up, as well as director Ryan Coogler “for giving me the opportunity to show what I can do and to be fearless and to create a safe space for us to find the truth.”
“Just being in this room right now with all these people who have seen me grow up in front of the camera and in these rooms, I feel the love and support that you’ve always given me,” Jordan concluded. “It encouraged me to go on and do my best, so I just want to say thank you.”
Jordan’s win comes after tough solo losses at the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards and BAFTAs, although his performance has been recognized by a handful of critics’ groups.
Still, he and the rest of the “Sinners” cast — which won the award for Outstanding Cast Ensemble in a Motion Picture at this year’s Actor Awards — have garnered much praise and plenty of nominations for their genre-defying film, including five at Sunday’s show — the second-most nominations in Screen Actors Guild history.
