Each week, our staff highlights top local events to help you make the most of your time. Here’s a look at Midland events you won’t want to miss this week.
The Basin Red Dirt BBQ and Music Festival will return to Midland for its second year, combining Texas barbecue, live Red Dirt music and West Texas culture. This year’s entertainment will feature Whiskey Myers, Wade Bowen, Jesse Joe, Mike Chism and Hollow Point. The festival is scheduled for noon to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at the Scharbauer Sports Complex, 5514 Champions Drive, Midland. Tickets are required.
The Bush Family Home State Historic Site will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the house opening to visitors. The ceremony is planned for 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at 1412 W. Ohio St., Midland. In 2006, George H.W. Bush, Barbara Bush and Laura Bush were present to cut the ribbon and open the house to visitors, giving the public a chance to see one of the homes where the family got its start in West Texas.
At the event, remarks will be given by Bill Scott, the former president of the committee that restored the house, and Paul St. Hillaire, who served as director for more than 10 years when the site was known as the George W. Bush Childhood Home. Garrett Donnelly, commissioner of the Texas Historical Commission, will also speak about the future of the site. Afterward, there will be free tours of the house and refreshments. The Bush Family Home joined the Texas Historical Commission in 2023 and is one of 42 sites in Texas.
Down South Seafood’s annual crawfish cook-off began as a way to bring Louisiana fans together and support local veteran nonprofits. Organizer and business owner Ryan LeJeune said this year’s event will include a crawfish competition and live music from zydeco acts including Jimmy Breaux, Jamie Bergeron and the Kickin’ Cajuns, and Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band. This year’s competition is scheduled for noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at the American Legion, 501 Veterans Airpark Lane in Midland. The event is sanctioned by the Southern Cajun Cookoff Association. More information is available on the event website.
