Mitski has announced that her new live film, titled The Land, will be released in cinemas worldwide. Find all the details below.

The upcoming movie was filmed over three nights at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, last September, as part of the New York singer-songwriter’s ‘The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We’ tour.

Her seventh and latest studio album of the same name arrived in 2023, with NME hailing it as “masterful” in a four-star review.

The Land will be released exclusively at 630 cinemas across 30 countries around the globe, for a limited time only. It is due to premiere on Wednesday October 22.

Tickets go on sale next Monday (September 15) – sign up here to buy yours. Fans who register will receive updates on locations and showtimes at a later date.

The film was directed by Grant James and mixed by Mitski’s long-standing producer, Patrick Hyland. It is produced by Moniker Films and Good Harbor Music, in association with Working Class Films and Dead Oceans

An official synopsis reads: “Mitski: The Land converts the magic and majesty of witnessing Mitski live onto screen. Filmed over three nights at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre in 2024, this is a thrilling portrayal of what kept hundreds of thousands of fans rapt at venues across the globe.

“A phenomenal live performer, Mitski brought her acclaimed seventh album, ‘The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We’, to the world’s stages in theatrical and daring fashion, presenting as much a spectacle as an expansive live show.”

It continues: “Alongside a seven-piece band and with choreography by Monica Mirabile, Mitski uses every inch of the stage to her advantage, weaving in and out of the spotlight and shadows. Mitski: The Land captures an artist at the height of her musical powers, bringing a cinematic intimacy to the sweeping live experience, showcasing music from ‘The Land Is…’ alongside reworkings and reimaginations of songs that colour her expansive career.

“The starkness of the stage design (created by Andi Watson) evokes the album’s themes of isolation, longing, and the wild beauty of human connection, with visual elements that shift from a striking minimalism to a lush, dreamlike tableau.”

It concludes: “[…] Mitski: The Land preserves the rich, raw aura of having experienced these shows first-hand, whilst offering fans the opportunity to remember together or witness Mitski’s magic for the very first time.”

Marc Allenby, CEO of Trafalgar Releasing, said: “Mitski is a visionary artist and a compelling performer and her first concert film is just as special – it’s a privilege to bring this film to cinemas and Mitski fans around the world.”

Last summer saw Mitski deliver a headline performance at London’s All Points East. In 2023, NME gave the artist’s show at the Union Chapel in the capital a glowing five-star review. It read: “Union Chapel chimes well with the sumptuous sound of Mitski’s seventh record, and chafes intriguingly with themes of destruction evident on it.

“Under the eye of the petal-shaped stained glass high up on the eastern wall, acoustic versions of these songs allow the poetry within to bloom.”

At the beginning of this year, Mitski teamed up with Tamino on a track called ‘Sanctuary’. She has since worked with Florence + The Machine on their new single ‘Everybody Scream’, and the band’s upcoming album of the same name.

Florence Welch recently called Mitski “one of [her] favourite artists of all time”, adding that the collaboration was “just so special”. She said: “I didn’t know if she even worked on other people’s records, but I reached out: ‘I know you’re in town for shows, would you like to come to the studio?’ And she said yes!”
