While there are other rivals for the throne (including Wednesday star Jenna Ortega and Pearl star Mia Goth, the most ambitious modern scream queen is Samara Weaving. She’s starred in many spooky films, ranging from The Babysitter (one of my personal favorites) to Mayhem, and she even had a regular role in the gory TV series Ash vs. The Evil Dead. And if you’d like to see Weaving’s best horror film, you’re in luck because Ready or Not is now streaming on Hulu.
The plot of Ready or Not involves Samara Weaving’s character marrying into a quirky family with a strange ritual: all new family members must play a randomly selected game. She draws hide and seek, but this family’s wild version of the game involves all of them taking up weapons and trying to hunt down and murder the new girl. Unless she can turn the tables on everyone trying to kill her, the bride’s first day in this family will be her last.
Samara Weaving in Ready Or Not.
Samara Weaving is the star of Ready or Not, and she does an excellent job of playing a resourceful character who didn’t know what kind of seriously psycho family she married into. Weaving does a great job of portraying her character as one who is scared and vulnerable but has enough of an edge to hold her own. It’s major Final Girl energy, and she’s dripping with it from her first scene to the very last.
The rest of the cast (ahem) slays, including Adam Brody, best known for his roles in Mr. and Mrs. Smith and The O.C. He is joined by Andie MacDowell, best known for her roles in Groundhog Day and Sex, Lies, and Videotape. Rounding out the cast is Melanie Scrofano, best known for her recurring role in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and the lead role in Wynonna Earp.
Beyond the stellar cast, what makes Ready or Not such an engaging film is its killer game of hide-and-seek. We get all of the blood and gore of a horror movie with all the relentless pacing of an action movie. Much like the onscreen characters playing, you will have trouble taking your eyes off the murderous shenanigans (many of which are far funnier than you might expect) until only one player is left standing.
Even though horror often gets a bad rap with critics, Ready or Not has a whopping 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics generally praised the film for its smart script and the dark sense of humor underlying almost every scene. That intermittent levity helps the frequent scares in the film really pop, resulting in a movie that can win over just about anyone through its rugged (and occasionally ragged) charm.
Will you agree that Ready or Not is worth watching, or would you rather be shot by crazy family members than play this dangerous game? The only way to find out is to play your own game and stream this film on Hulu today. Afterward, you might never look at hide and seek or Samara Weaving the same way ever again.
