Molly Shannon is paying tribute to Diane Keaton by recalling a special conversation she had with the late actress.
“@diane_keaton What a one of a kind, legend, inspiration. So generous to ALL women,” Shannon, 61, wrote via Instagram on Monday, October 13. “This is what she was like — so kind to other female performers. I soaked up every interview she gave and DEVOURED all her books. So INTELLIGENT and funny and soulful. Deep. I love how she LOVED TURTLENECKS❤️!!”
Keaton died in California at the age of 79, a spokesperson for her family confirmed to People on Saturday, October 11. Her official cause of death has yet to be revealed.
A friend of Keaton’s, however, told People that the Annie Hall star’s health “declined very suddenly” in her last few months as she withdrew from public life.

In her tribute to Keaton, Shannon shared a private conversation she had with the actress via text message in November 2022.
“You don’t have to respond. But I just Zoom interviewed Steve Martin for his new graphic novel for independent bookstores with a big virtual audience,” Shannon wrote to the Oscar winner. “Asked him what it was like to work with you, and he said you made his heart pound and basically how everyone felt that way about you hanging on every word of yours. … Just wanted to tell you. He just was singing your praises to all!”
Keaton would later reply to the message by acknowledging the compliment, but also sharing a new one in return.
“That is SO SWEET!!!” Keaton replied. “More like how amazing YOU ARE! Beyond hilarious and talented. Thank you so much for this message. You are a STAR.”
Shannon also took time in her latest post to share a portion of Keaton’s book that resonated with her — in more ways than one.
In Let’s Just Say It Wasn’t Pretty, which was released in 2014, Keaton looked at beauty, aging and the importance of staying true to one’s self.
Shannon shared one small excerpt of the book that left a profound impact on the former Saturday Night Live star.

“I do think life is a miracle. At this point, I’m sure of one thing and that’s this: I know nothing. I would venture to say some of my friends would agree. At least I’m pretty sure they would concur that life is far more impenetrable than we imagined,” Keaton wrote in the book. “Most of us over 60 have come to the point where we recognize that our accomplishments are diddly-squat in the grand scheme of things.”
Keaton continued, “I guess I have to admit that I’m in preparation for the incomprehensible end zone of life. I don’t know if I have enough courage to stare into the spectacle of the great unknown. I don’t know if I will make bold mistakes, go out in a blaze of glory unbroken by my losses, defy complacency and refuse to face the unknown like the coward I know myself to be, but I hope so.”
In her final years of life, Keaton — who is survived by her two children, Dexter and Duke, whom she adopted in her 50s — had the opportunity to try new things, like launch an eyewear collection, partner with Hudson Grace for a home decor collaboration and release her debut holiday single.
“I don’t know what’s going to come my way. Maybe nothing’s going to come my way,” she shared with Us in September 2022 about her career. “I’ve been so lucky, and so I just don’t want to push off anything without knowing if I could have a chance to know.”
