The member of the Royal Family, who will celebrate her 61st birthday next week, has been described as ‘the most underrated royal’ for her work campaigning for victims of sexual violence

Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, holds one of the most senior positions within the Royal Family. Turning 61 next week, she has devoted herself to championing victims of sexual violence, women’s health issues, children’s charities and numerous other causes.

Born in Oxford and raised in Kent, the Duchess, formerly Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones, is reported to have first met her future husband, Prince Edward, in 1987. Their relationship began in 1993, and they wed in 1999.

Upon their wedding, the couple were granted the titles of Earl and Countess of Wessex, and King Charles bestowed upon his brother the Duke of Edinburgh title in 2023, following the death of their father, Prince Philip, two years previously. Sophie, who marks her birthday on Tuesday, January 20, has been recognised as the Duchess of Edinburgh since then, reports the Express.

A YouTube video by TruLux, which showcases content about royalty and the world’s elite, explored Sophie’s journey as a Royal Family member.

Describing her as “the most underrated royal”, the video suggested that “few figures have undergone as remarkable a transformation” as the Duchess, noting she has “quietly become one of the monarchy’s most valuable assets”.

“In March 2023, following the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Sophie and Edward were granted the titles of Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh,” it said. “This elevation was not merely ceremonial, but represented recognition of their years of dedicated service to the crown and the country.

“The Edinburgh title, with its deep connections to Prince Philip’s legacy, was a significant honour that reflected the respect they had earned within the royal family. The transition to these new titles marked a new chapter in Sophie’s royal journey.

“As Duchess of Edinburgh, she took on additional responsibilities and became more prominent in representing the Royal Family at important events. This elevation also reflected the changing dynamics within the Royal Family as Sophie and Edward became more senior working royals following the departures of other family members from official duties.

“Sophie’s new role as Duchess of Edinburgh has been characterised by increased visibility and responsibility. She has represented the Royal Family at state occasions, undertaken more foreign visits, and taken on patronages that reflect the dignity of her new position.”

It continued: “Today, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, is widely regarded as one of the most effective and hardworking members of the Royal Family.

“Her calendar is brimming with engagements that span from supporting military families, to advocating for gender equality, and addressing issues of sexual violence. Her work has taken her around the world, representing the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth with distinction.

“One of Sophie’s most significant contributions has been her work in addressing sexual violence and supporting survivors. Her involvement with organisations working to prevent sexual violence in conflict zones has been particularly impactful.”

Should the Duke of Edinburgh ascend to the throne, Sophie would become Queen alongside him. However, Prince Edward is 15th in the line of succession, making this virtually impossible. Their children, Lady Louise and James, Earl of Wessex, are 16th and 17th in line respectively.

The video concluded: “Sophie’s role is likely to become even more significant as the royal family continues to evolve. Her experience, dedication, and proven ability to handle both triumph and adversity make her an invaluable asset to the institution.”
