Horror movie legend Mark Patton, who starred in A Nightmare on Elm Street‘s second instalment opposite Robert Englund as Freddy Kruger, has posted a heartbreaking health update just weeks after his 66th birthday. The iconic star has been battling a series of health conditions including long Covid and Ménière’s disease, a chronic condition that causes intense, daily vertigo, nausea, and hearing loss, which led to his family organising a GoFundMe. He has been unable to work or travel due to his conditions and he broke his silence to explain his situation to fans telling them he has spent 18 months ill in bed.
Taking to his Instagram page he posted images with one of his carers named Veronica and penned: “Haven’t written for a while, I have been too tired and confused. I am sad that I missed @scarefestweekend I had put so much hope into a sign of being better, but alas no. One of the triggers for a full on attack is stress, as I have been in bed for 1 1/2 years now everything is stressful.
“I am making decisions about my future and where I will spend the next couple of years maybe my final home,” he wrote. “I am thinking The Actors longterm care where I will have a staff, nurses and food. I am a huge fall risk and I can’t afford another fall to the face and breaking more teeth and ribs.
“I am in bed or wheelchair, I don’t walk alone because it isn’t safe,” he revealed. “Thank you for the funds at GoFundMe people can be very judgmental about that option ( including me) but I am greatly appreciative that it was there.
“The older I get I realise how important your childhood and parents are. My friends are or were highly educated and wealthy. I compared myself to them, mistake the things they didn’t think about because they didn’t have too.
“My family and most of my friends are gone. I have been sick for a longtime so I have plenty of time to think. Anyway thanks for listening and caring….I hope this is not too maudlin, it was a lot of work so I am sending it. Love to you all, Mark,” he signed off
His conditions have been compounded by his HIV diagnosis which he received on his 40th birthday in 1999. He was given just one year to live but has outlived that prognosis by almost three decades now. His boyfriend, Dallas star Timothy Patrick Murphy, died of Aids at the age of just 29 in December 1988.
Mark’s GoFund me was set up by his niece Ida and is currently at $31,508. The day before his birthday on September 21 she gave fans and doners an update on his condition. Thanks to your donations he know has an electric wheelchair, his rent is covered and he was able to get in to a doctor. We are over half way to our goal of 50k which will cover Mark’s living expenses for the next year,” she said.
Fans rushed to offer their support to the star following his post taking to the comments to share their thoughts. “Always in our thoughts Mr Patton… sending all the good vibes we can spare,” one wrote. “Always in my thoughts. You are so so loved, Mark,” another added.
A third chimed in: “So much love sent to you, Mark! You are daily in my meditations, as someone I care for deeply! I wish I could do more!” Meanwhile a fourth shared: “I wish nothing but good for you. Stay safe and comfortable.”
