BRATTLEBORO — A Columbus, Ohio, band picked up East Coast tour dates that will allow Scotty Tabachnick to join them.
Moviola, which started in 1993, is touring in support of its 12th record “Earthbound.” On Feb. 26, the band will play with Wet Tuna and Animal Piss, It’s Everywhere at the Stone Church in Brattleboro.
“My work kind of limits my travel, but over February break we are playing some shows in New England,” said Tabachnick, principal of NewBrook Elementary School in Newfane.
Tabachnick sings and plays guitar, keyboard and harmonica in the band.
Ted Hattemer, bassist, said Moviola started in Columbus as all the members went to Ohio State University and most of them met in college. Over the years, the band has only added members, not gotten rid of anyone.
A lot of friends moved to the Brattleboro area after 2001, Hattemer said. That includes Tabachnick and Matt Valentine of Wet Tuna.
Jerry Dannemiller, guitarist, called Moviola “weirdly democratic.”
“Everyone, at least on our last bunch of records, has songs on them that they’ve written,” Dannemiller said.
Hattemer said the band doesn’t typically play Tabachnick’s tunes when he’s not around. Whenever Tabachnick was back in town, he would record with them. He recorded his parts locally for the new album.
Moviola took a little break in the mid to late 2010s to focus on family. Hattemer described the band’s music as “roots based.”
“Wilco is kind of music we can all agree on,” he said when the comparison was made.
Moviola doesn’t come to albums with a set plan, Dannemiller said. The band collects songs, practicing and recording them until a collection of 12 to 15 are finalized.
Dannemiller said the lyrics tend to be about “general navigation of the world these days and how that plays out across everyone’s lives.”
The new album was put out through Dromedary Records in Kingston, N.Y. Moviola has played at the record label’s annual festival, Drom Fest, in Catskill, and will again this year.
For now, the focus is on touring. Dannemiller said the band is “ecstatic” to play at the Stone Church “because it looks like a gorgeous place to play.”
Tour dates on the East Coast are “centered around this Brattleboro show,” Hattemer said. They include Young Ethel’s in Brooklyn on Feb. 25, The Lilypad in Boston on Feb. 27, Tubby’s in Kingston, N.Y. on Feb. 28.
Moviola is trying to set up West Coast shows for this summer.
